Whether you are joining us as full-time faculty or as an adjunct instructor, your presence here matters—and your contributions will help shape the future of our students, departments, and institution. Winston-Salem State University is a bold, vibrant and diverse academic community that fosters the creative thinking, analytical problem-solving, and depth of character graduates need to transform themselves and their world. These values embody our motto, “Enter to Learn. Depart to Serve.” Founded in 1892, WSSU enjoys a distinguished reputation as a historically black constituent institution of the Uni- versity of North Carolina that offers a rich curriculum rooted in a high-quality, liberal education. Our undergraduate and graduate students can choose from many innovative areas of study designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to develop creative solutions to today’s—and tomorrow’s—complex problems.

WSSU has emerged as an institution with a national reputation for positively impacting the social and economic mobility of its students. The U.S. News and World Report ranks WSSU as:

WSSU also ranks as one of the Top 10 most afford - able HBCUs in the country by HBCU Lifestyle, and Money Magazine ranks WSSU as the #2 HBCU in the nation for its quality and affordability. Since 2018, WSSU has emerged as more than “a teaching institution.” Because of the research activity of faculty and staff, WSSU has firmly established itself as a burgeoning research-intensive university. According to the national rankings on National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development (NCES, 2021), WSSU increased 143 spots from rank #537 in Fiscal Year 2019-20 to rank #394 in Fiscal Year 2020-21. In the state of North Carolina, WSSU moved up from rank #19 in Fiscal Year 2019 to rank #11 in Fiscal Year 2020 among North Carolina public and private institutions; moreover, WSSU’s sponsored research portfolio of extramurally funded awards has tripled since 2018.

IMPROVE UNDERGRADUATE DEGREEE EFFICIENCY

Strategic Priorities Our Strategic Priorities are the specific priorities we’ll focus on for the upcoming year, 2023 – 2024. This is how we’ll work toward accomplishing our eight-year institutional commitments – in small bites. Several tactics have been assigned to each priority, and a staff member has been assigned to each tactic. Measurement will be key to determining the success of each tactic. We’ll share the results of the year’s work with a scorecard that will track key metrics.
