You’re Not Angry, You’re Afraid How Fear Disguises Itself in Your Everyday Life
I was in a deposition recently, and the opposing counsel started going after my client. I began to get mad, a protective instinct that comes naturally when you see someone getting picked on. But I caught myself. Where was the anger really coming from? I felt something profound in that moment. I realized I was afraid. I was fearful that the case would go in a bad direction, and even deeper yet, I was afraid that it might mess up my ability to provide for my kids. When it comes down to it, there are only two emotions: fear and love. All the other things we feel are one of those big feelings in disguise. Negative emotions all boil down to fear. Letting go of the fear through awareness makes you a better lawyer, parent, and person. The book “Awareness” by Anthony De Mello talks about how many of us are sleepwalking through life. If you want to deal with anxiety, depression, or anger, you have to recognize where it comes from. And when you really look, you’ll usually find fear sitting underneath. You can ask yourself, “What if I weren’t afraid of that happening?” Next thing you know, the fear dissipates and so do the limiting emotions around it. Accepting the reality of your fear allows you to move on and focus your energy on how you will handle the situation. No longer gripped by a negative emotion, no longer afraid, you can think clearly. A lot of suffering is rooted in the fear of not achieving one’s desires. When we become too attached to the pain of not
hitting our goals, it can derail all our plans. That’s just the ego doing its thing. But you can detach from the how and when of success. Flex enough to roll with the punches, follow where your compass points, remain goal-oriented, and understand that you can always take another step if things don’t go as planned. I think about Tony Horton, THE workout guy behind the P90X program designed to completely change your body in 90 days. He had a saying, “Just hit play.” You didn’t have to be “ready,” you just had to start. Some days suck and some days don’t. So, you just need to do your best and forget the rest. Even as a lawyer, I can be as prepared as possible but still face a judge who doesn’t agree with me or wants to throw out my evidence. I can’t crumble in those moments or succumb to the fear; I just have to give it my all. The problem is that we care about too many things today. There’s a subtle art in not caring about all the noise. You only have so many cares to give in a single day, so don’t get bent out of shape about the stupid things on the news. It’s the wrong place to put your focus. If something happens to your child or loved one, drop the fear and address that. You can’t control other people’s emotions. Let them feel what they will feel without taking responsibility for their disappointment, anger, or whatever else. It’s like jiujitsu. You’ll never know everything. You have to keep showing up, learning, and adjusting every day until you have no more days left. But life will go much better when you aren’t torturing yourself with attachments to negative emotions and fear. Just keep stepping forward, aware, grounded, and free.

Pillow Talk: Prep for Your Best Rest Yet
When your head hits the pillow, are you counting sheep but not catching any z’s? It’s time to hit snooze on nights of tossing and turning and wake up refreshed with a better sleep routine! Getting the proper amount of rest every night is crucial to living a healthy life and can even help prevent mental health issues like depression and anxiety. A sweet slumber starts with the proper routine. Here’s the dreamy plan to wake up feeling your best. Bedtime Boundaries Consistency and bedtime boundaries can help your body and mind get into a regular rhythm to reach REM sleep. Try to go to bed around the same time every night to train yourself to get sleepy regularly. It doesn’t matter what time you choose as long as you stick as close to your sleep schedule as possible. You should also select a time before bed when you consistently turn off your phone, computer, and other devices. The blue light from electronics makes your mind think it’s daytime and can distract you from dreaming. Relax, Rewind, Rest You can use many tools to help relax and unwind from the day and prevent intrusive thoughts and tension from keeping you up at night. Listening to gentle music before entering the bedroom can put you in a sleepy state of mind. Journaling or writing a to-do list before it’s time to
nod off can remove lingering stresses or racing thoughts. Try meditation or yoga to ease your muscles, focus your mind, and eliminate anxious feelings.
Dine Right, Sleep Tight Though a late-night snack or a delayed dinner
might seem harmless, it can make drifting off difficult. Your digestive system takes
time and energy to break down food, which can keep you awake if you eat too late. Eat light, healthy suppers so your
stomach can take a snooze with you, and avoid eating anything several hours before you plan to hit the hay.
BARRY VS. THE BOTS The Truth About AI Legal Help
There’s never been more legal information at your fingertips thanks to search
necessarily understand the difference between a proposed law and actual law or jurisdictional nuances. The internet isn’t subject to the same professional standards as a lawyer. The Right Questions No matter how smart and capable you are, without a basic understanding of the law, it’s easy to ask the wrong questions, take misguided steps, and wind up on a frustrating journey with no sense of the right direction. Beyond that, most people don’t know how to take information from the internet and put it into practice. We had one client who was highly intelligent and interested in the law who decided to file his own case. Despite all his research, he was only offered $10,000. When he came to us and we refiled, that number jumped to $250,000. Lawyers have to think on their feet and have developed the skills needed to win cases over time. No amount of clicks and searches can build those skills. The internet can’t listen to your story or weigh your unique circumstances, and it won’t protect your personal information like a trusted lawyer will. Your case deserves more than a search result. engines and AI like ChatGPT, which can churn out pages of advice in seconds. You would think navigating a lawsuit would be easier than ever, but information doesn’t mean expertise. While AI can do incredible things, it can’t replace a trained lawyer who has practiced law and is willing to hear your unique story and personal circumstances. From the potential for inaccurate information to hyper-generalized results, this month, it’s Barry versus the bots, as we explore why all your legal advice should not come from Google or AI. Inaccurate Information It’s hard to know if the information you’re getting from AI, social media, or search engines is as good as it may sound, or is accurate or ethical. AI models work off the data they were trained on and don’t just update their knowledge banks in real-time. The results could be outdated, come from unreliable sources, or simply follow a pattern. A bot doesn’t

1 Why You Should Care Less 2 Your Guide to Dreamy Sleep Habits Google Can’t Replace Your Lawyer 3 Hear What Our Clients Have to Say What Would You Name Our Firm? 4 A Softer Step Into Retirement Rethinking Retirement
These days, more people are scaling back on long working hours, especially Gen Z and millennials. Many pick up part-time work or projects that give them space without completely severing ties to working life. It’s a slow shift — not a sudden stop — and it’s gaining traction. And for those approaching retirement, it’s something to consider. Retirement doesn’t have to mean walking away for good.
This shift is partly fueled by remote and flexible work options, making it easier to downshift without leaving the workforce. A recent study from Fidelity Investments found that 66% of younger workers would prefer a phased retirement, and more than half of all respondents said they plan to work part-time during retirement. The reasons vary. Some want more time for travel, hobbies, or personal projects, but still value structure and purpose. Others want to stay active or involved in their field. Working in some capacity can also help with cash flow, delay Social Security, or cover insurance, which is especially important for those retiring before age 65. That said, partial retirement brings its own planning challenges. Health coverage is often limited for part-time workers. Income from consulting or part-time jobs could also reduce early Social Security benefits. And scaling back hours usually means scaling back contributions to retirement savings. Still, for those who plan ahead, semi-retirement offers a flexible way to ease into the next stage of life. It provides space to try new things without giving up the financial or emotional benefits work can offer.
