Optimizing Nursing Workflow

The use of technology to improve user workflow is one of the most out- standing achievements in nursing informatics. We live in a technologically advanced age where information can be sent and received with a click or a touch of a button. North Central Bronx Hospital has introduced the Connex Spot Vitals Machine. This machine allows the end user to login as a provid- er using their TKID located on their ID badge. Once the user is signed in the user is able to scan the patient ’ s ID. Vitals are taken by the user includ- ing blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation. Respi- rations, height, weight, and pain indicators can be manually entered into the device. After the vitals are obtained in the machine the end users

saves/send the vitals. The device sends the vitals of the patient into the vitals flowsheet within the patient ’ s EPIC chart. Previously the user would have to transcribe vitals manually into the patient ’ s chart in EPIC. Our end users in the Medical Surgical service line have expressed that the Spot Vital device is a useful tool that improved their work- flow for obtaining vitals. I look forward to future technology that will help automate workflow in Nursing.
