Counties tackle accessibility issues

Quartet collared on charges from trespassing report Four men from Prescott and Stormont counties tried to run off into the woods when they were caught lurking around a Limoges village neighbourhood. Now they will be meeting with a judge in provincial court on a variety of charges. Police received a suspicious person call from the Des Pins Road neighbour- hood in Limoges on Sept. 25. The caller reported an unknown vehicle parked at a neighbour’s house. When the police arrived at the premises, they found four people at the site who all fled into the nearby woods. Police tracked them all down in the end and, after questioning and checking the premises, arrested three of them on charges of mischief, possession of stolen property, and theft from a vehicle of items under $5000 value. Facing these charges are Maxime Bruyere, 18, of Embrun, Maxime Lacroix, 18, of North Stormont Township, and Maxime Larocque, 22, of Casselman. The fourth person caught on the scene is a 17-year-old Casselman youth whose identity is withheld under the Young Offenders Act. He will also face charges in juvenile court. The three adults are all scheduled for a first appearance on their charges Nov. 27 at provincial court in L’Orignal. Fraud charges Police received a call about a theft Sept. 29 from the Mr. Gas gas bar on Ed- wards Street in Rockland. Investigation determined that one of the employees at the gas station is suspected of taking money from the business account. Donald Leinen, 53, of Rockland is charged with two counts of fraud over a value of $5000. He is scheduled for first appearance in provincial court Nov. 6. Drunk driver Drinking before driving has landed a St-Isidore man with a provincial court ap- pearance later in the month. Julien Boulerice-Laforest, 19, of St-Isidore, faces four charges following a police stopcheck on Notre-Dame Street in Embrun on Sept. 29. He is charged with driving while having a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams, driving a vehicle while having open liquor at the time, speeding, and having improper tires on his vehicle. His first appearance in provincial court on the charges is Oct. 23. Marcel Lapensée, 35, of The Nation municipality, had his Ford Ranger 2011 stopped by police on McGill Street in Hawkesbury on Sept. 19. Police report indi- cated suspicion that his blood-alcohol content was over the legal limit. His vehi- cle was impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence suspended on the spot for 90 days. He is now charged with driving while having a blood-alcohol content exceeding 80 milligrams. He was released on a promise to appear in provincial court in L’Orignal Oct. 9. A Russell Township man has a trip to court in Cornwall later this month after a late-night drive through Dundas County. Kyle Beehler, 20, of Russell Township is charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams. The charges resulted from a midnight stop Sept. 27 at an OPP traf- fic check set up at the junction of Kyle Road and County Road 13 in North Dundas Township. Beehler has an Oct. 10 provincial court date in Cornwall. Stolen tractor Someone stole a tractor during the night from a St-Albert farm on Sept. 26. The missing tractor is a large Massey-Ferguson 6480, model 2012, with a red body and a silver top. It was taken from a site on Route 900 West in St-Albert. Anyone who has seen the tractor or has information on the theft can call Const. Gabriel Jordache at the Embrun detachment at 613-443-4499. capital works budget will also include mon- ey for exterior work on counties buildings and other facilities along with installing ac- cessible pedestrian walk signals in Cassel- man at the intersections of County Roads 3 and 7 and at the intersection of Principale Street and Laflèche/Racine Streets. The three years from 2015 to 2017 will feature more modifications of county road intersections to meet pedestrian accessibil- ity needs, improvements of counties build- ings, and replacement of exterior lighting in social housing buildings, plus a continual maintenance improvement plan for future accessibility concerns at UCPR buildings.

L’ORIGNAL | The United Counties now has a plan to deal with accessibility concerns for residents of Prescott-Russell. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) approved a five-year acces- sibility plan along with a new integrated ac- cessibility policy during its Sept. 25 public session. The goal of both the plan and the policy is to bring the UCPR and its member municipalities in line with the provincial government’s Integrated Accessibility Stan- dards (ISR) included in the 2005 Accessibil- ity for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The five-year plan runs from 2013 to 2017 and features a list of goals for each year. The first year’s objectives include rede- signing the UCPR website and its content to meet the World Wide Web Consortium’s content accessibility guidelines, revising the counties human resources department procedures for job offers and other mat- ters to meet ISR guidelines, interior and/ or exterior renovations at public housing units and other UCPR buildings in Russell and Hawkesbury and other locales to meet accessibility standards.
