DURING THE LESSON
1. Introduce the Book (2–3 minutes) • Read this brief synopsis to the group: The billy goat brothers want to cross the bridge to eat the green

grass, but the mean troll won’t let them. How will they get across the bridge? • Discuss new vocabulary and language structures students will encounter: brothers, p. 2 bigger/biggest, pp. 4, 6 first, p. 5
1. Review and Teach Sight Words (4–5 minutes) Review sight words. Dictate three words you have taught on the Sight Word Checklist for Level E or below. Or choose your own words and write them in the checklist’s extra spaces. Ask each student to write the words and check off those he or she can spell without help. Teach a new sight word. Suggested word: over
second, p. 8
2. Have Students Read the Book Independently (8–10 minutes) • Students read softly while you confer with individuals and take mini-records on the Observation Form. • Use some of the following prompts. Choose them according to each student’s needs.
Do these steps in order: 1. What’s Missing?
Prompts for Monitoring
Write the word on a dry-erase board. Erase one or more letters and ask, “What’s missing?” Write the missing letter(s) back into the word. Repeat the procedure three or four times, erasing more letters each time until you’ve erased the entire word. 2. Mix and Fix Give students trays of magnetic letters. Ask them to find the letters in over and make the word using the letters. Have them slide a finger under the word as they say it. Then have them mix and fix the word one more time.
That makes sense, but look at the first letter. Find the tricky part. Are you right? Prompts for Word Solving and Phonics Could the word be ? How do you know?
