whipping post, and a soldier was scourging Him. He saw the whip in the soldier’s hand, with its thick lashes studded here and there with bits of lead, which were intended to cut into the flesh. And as the soldier brought the whip down on the bare shoulders of Jesus, the dreamer shuddered when he saw the marks and bloodstains it left behind. And when the soldier raised his hand to strike again, the dreamer rushed forward intending to stop him. As he did so, the soldier turned round and the dreamer recog nized—himself.. W e often think how cruel those men must have been w'ho scourged and crucified Jesus. But remember that whenever we do wrong, we, too, cause the heart of Jesus to bleed with sorrow and pain.—E. E. L ark .

Points and Problems X. “ It was the third hour” (Mk. 15:25). The chronology of the crucifixion is very definitely and exactly stated by the writers of the first three Gospels. . Evidently using the Jewish method of reckoning, Mark alone names the "third hour” as the time they fixed Him to the cross. This would be nine o’clock in the forenoon. Then all three agree that the period of “ darkness” over the whole land began at the "sixth hour,” and that this darkness prevailed until the “ ninth hour,” or three o’clock in the after noon (Matt. 27:45; Mk. 15:33; Lk. 23:44), at which time His death took place. John’s account, however, seems to contradict these statements, for he fixes our Lord’s second appearance before Pilate at the “sixth hour” (19:13, 14). The explanation is that John uses the Greek and Roman method of com puting the day’s beginning from midnight. Thus John’s “ sixth” hour would be the first hour in Mark’s reckoning, or six o’clock A.M. according to our own present-day method. Thus the order of events would be: First, the delivery of Jesus to the Jews by Pilate at six a . m . ; second, the placing of Jesus on the cross at nine A.M.; third, the coming of the darkness at twelve A.M., and fourth, His death at about three p.M. 2. “The superscription of his accusation was written” (Mk. 15:26). It is of interest that all four of the Gospel writers speak of this “ superscription” over the cross, and no two of them have the words exactly alike. Certain critics, hostile to the doctrine of verbal inspiration, like to point to this apparent discrepancy as clear evidence that the words of the Bible cannot be divinely inspired. And some Christians have been disturbed by the problem. For purposes of comparison, it will be helpful to lay the different accounts side by side: Several things now should be noticed: First, that these four accounts are not con tradictory, but complementary. The entire original superscription was “ This is Jesus of Nazareth the K ing of the Jews.” Second, as Mark tells us in 15:26, the Gospel writers were interested primarily in the "accusa tion” which the superscription set forth. This was “ The K ing of the Jews,” and all four have this word for word alike. The chief priests tried desperately to have sev eral words added to the accusation, but Pilate curtly ordered it left as written (John 19:21, 22). And it still stands today in Scripture unchanged. Third, the hostile critics generally ignore what John plainly tells us, namely, that the “title” was writ ten in three different languages, “ in Hebrew, and in Latin, and in Greek” (19:20, R. V .). This one fact, apart from all other consid erations, is sufficient to explain all the va riations. There were really three inscrip tions instead of one. Jesus suffered and died. He was taken be fore the different rulers and condemned to die although they could find no sin that He had done. His enemies said all sorts of things against Him. His friends and dis ciples ran away and hid in fear. Even Peter who had boasted that even if every one should leave Jesus he would never forsake Jesus—yes, even Peter told every one who asked him whether he were Jesus’ friend,, that he had never seen Him. Jesus was left without any person to help or comfort Him. He let His enemies have their way with Him. He was led out of the city of Jeru salem and onto a little hill and there He was crucified. How strange it is to think of Jesus, the Son of God, dying like this! If He was the Son of God, why didn’t He stop His enemies from doing this? He could have stopped them. God is all-powerful, and Jesus is God. But Jesus let them kill Him because He had come to this earth to die. Only by His dying could the people on this earth enter heaven when they die. Because of their sins the people could not enter heaven, but through Jesus they can come. And this is the only way that we can come, by1 be-
