However, some of the women of the com pany gathered courage and went to the tomb, doubtless to mourn there. When they arrived, they were amazed to find the stone rolled away from the mouth of the tomb, and the body of the Lord gone. They found only “ a young man” keeping watch (vs. 1-5). The astonishing message of the angel was that the One whom the women sought,’ the One who had been crucified, had risen from among the dead (v. 6). Christ was the first One ever to come from among the dead, and this was as He told them it would be. All others who had been raised from the dead had had mere restorations; this One had a resurrection. The angel bade the women go quickly and tell the other disciples what had occurred, and also to remind them of what the Lord had told them, that after He was risen He would go before them into Galilee where they would see Him (vs. 7, 8). A special message was sent to Peter, and this fact reveals the compassionate heart of Jesus toward His erring disciples. The assurance was given them that they werq no longer to be looking backward to One who had died, but they were to be looking forward to One who was alive. We become so familiar with the fact of the resurrection of our Lord that we sometimes miss the comfort and assurance which the fact should bring. If there was more experi mental knowledge of the presence of the living Christ, there would be far more readiness to share in service with Him. II. T he C ommission for D isciples (14-16) After He had appeared to several indi viduals, Christ appeared to the eleven dis ciples as they sat at meat (v. 14). He had to rebuke their unbelief in what they had been told concerning His resurrection. They had forgotten His words, seven times re peated, that He would rise after His crucifixion, and they even had refused to believe those who had actually seen the risen Lord. Unbelief is the sin that besets all believers, and we must learn to lay it aside (cf. Heb. 12:1). The Lord sent forth His disciples into all the world to preach the gospel to every creature (v. 15) . It is well to notice particu larly that He did not send them forth to save souls. Certainly it may be expected that when the gospel is preached souls will be saved. But the commission was to preach the gospel everywhere, and when that was done, the commission would be fulfilled and the responsibility would be met. The world is ever saying, “Let us see the product of your toil. How many have you added to the roll? Are there many that are saved?” These utterances indicate a yearning for results rather than a striving to obey the Lord’s command. The obedience belongs to us, the results to the Lord. Our Lord indicated that not all would be saved (v. 16). But those who hear and believe and are baptized shall be saved. The baptism adds nothing to faith, but it is the outward confession of the inward faith possessed by the believer. III.
