W ord of God and intrust the keeping of our souls to the only competent One, the Lord Jesus Christ. By His Spirit we can be empowered to live righteously in this present evil world. Praise God for the power of His Son, the Lord Jesus, our Saviour! Helps for the Leader I. A M atter of B rains Ironical indeed was the appearance of a huge billboard recently displayed in the business district of Los Angeles, Calif. A huge portrait of a shrewd business man appeared beside a slogan that, interpreted in one way, implied that real brains re quired a certain brand of whiskies. Behind the top portion of the head, electric lights flashed on and off, at intervals illuminating the area where the brain would be. The effect of the heat from the lights, however, gradually baked the paint on the forehead of the man in the picture. By daylight there could be seen a sharp alteration in the appearance of the forehead that had been “ baked” by the repeated heat to which it had been exposed. The brain had been cooked. What a tragic symbol of what happens to the brain of many a man who yields to liquor propaganda!— I. M. S. II. I ts O w n W orst A d The “finished product” of the liquor trade is its own worst ad, and the old Scotch cobbler put his finger on the most vulner able point in liquor “ advertising.” The story goes that this boot repairer, himself a strict “ teetotaler,” was passing the local “pub” in a Scottish village when the land lord was assisting a customer off the premises. “ Here, John,” called the publican, “ ye micht gi’e this chap an airm tae his hoose.” “ Na, na,” replied the cobbler, “ye should dae what I dae when I’ve finished a job— put it in the show window.” — N ational T emperance E ducation F und . JUNE 26, 1938 MAKING UP OUR MINDS INTELLIGENTLY M atthew 5:17-20; R omans 10:1-10 Meditation on the Lesson There is one issue about which we must make up our minds; every other decision is subservient to it. In the last part of our second Scripture passage this all-impor tant matter is clearly presented, and the right course of action is shown. It con cerns salvation through faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ: “ That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine hieart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Rom. 10:9, 10). All other decisions are o f minor importance in comparison with the decision to accept Christ as Saviour, for this action determines one’s eternal destiny. When we are thus born again by the Spirit of God, our minds are set in tune with Christ’s, and we are enabled to think

as evidence against Him. In Matthew 15 they criticized Him for permitting His dis ciples to eat bread without washing their hands, an act which was another breach of ceremonial etiquette —-of the traditional rules that had grown up outside the Old Testament proper. Christ thereupon ad dressed them as hypocrites, who made an outward pretense of worshiping God, but whose hearts were far from Him. But in order to accomplish their purpose of put ting Him to death, these enemies of Christ had to turn the multitude against Him, so that He could be condemned publicly. Hence the leaven of their propaganda was set to work, finally culminating in the ar rest, condemnation, and crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. Satan does not label his wicked devices, but perniciously and gradually he injects his poison into the arteries of the thought life. It is then but one step to sway the multitudes when their minds are prepared. He is now at work as feverishly as he was in the days of Christ’s life upon this earth, and scores of gullible souls are being inveigled into his trap. It is his business to so disguise the real character of an idea that people will embrace and adopt it. Any thinking person knows, by scientific confirmation and by personal observation, that nicotine and alcohol are detrimental to the human body. But propagandists have been successful in convincing the ma jority that cigarettes and intoxicating liquors are almost indispensable to a well-balanced life. According to some reports, an athlete is only at his best when he is puffing on a “ Golden G low” cigarette, or imbibing a cocktail of an equally insipid title. Such nonsense! The person who regards his body as the temple of the living God will guard himself against these attempts to de ceive. In weightier matters propagandists are seeking to undermine the bulwark of Chris tian civilization. Communism, which has its tentacles firmly around many young American minds, strikes at the heart of the gospel. It destroys faith in God, in His Word, and in His church. It leads to a base, pagan philosophy of life which dis regards the sanctity of God-ordained insti tutions such as marriage and a unified home life. Mental, moral, and spiritual devasta tion are bound to follow in the wake of this sort of godlessness. W e can withstand the assaults of hell only as we plant our feet firmly upon the
