Great Customer Experience Program
Brewing up a storm
operation started by Mark French, who took his love of lager and home-brewing to another level when he started his own brewery. He and his team have created great traditional European lagers with an operation that is very proud of its Tasmanian roots. The Albert has a very loyal Hobart following just three years after it opened its doors. It is a family friendly bar with tasty meals and snacks and a focus on Albert lagers as well as Tasmanian wines and spirits. The Albert team are also gathering for a GCE Venue Awareness session in early March.
From North Hobart to the Northern suburbs of Hobart there has been an explosion of breweries in recent years, including Shambles, T-Bone, The Winston, Deep South, Overland, Brewlab, Spotty Dog and of course Moo Brew! Tasmania’s boutique beverage industries are now central to the identity of the state with incredible wineries, cideries and distilleries throughout the island. Currently the GCE Program is engaged with three great breweries set in the industrial areas of Moonah, Lutana and Goodwood. If you drive past Incat’s huge sheds on Bender Drive in Lutana, where catamarans are being built for the world’s waterways, you will arrive at a hidden gem - Spotty Dog Brewery & Taphouse overlooking the Prince of Wales Bay marina.
On the other side of Prince of Wales Bay from Spotty Dog, Lesley Van Tuil and Dave Lawrence established Brewlab in 2022. The couple met while working at The Den in Salamanca Place and wanted to create a place that offers great food and drinks. Brewlab is a small-batch brewery, licensed cafe and bar that is focused on promoting community involvement and inclusivity. Lesley says that Brewlab has a very loyal following that ranges from families wanting food and a coffee to tradies wanting a beer. “We seem to cross lots of different demographics at different times throughout the day.” Lesley and Dave are passionate about creating a great experience for guests and are looking forward to working with the GCE team as thy have done previously.
The brewery is a family-owned business and is named after the owners’ pet Dalmatians, Mishka and Mila. Apart from their great range of beers, the Taphouse kitchen serves great fried chicken and local Tassie produce. Marnie Rybak and her team have just completed a Business Health Check with Dave and the GCE Program will be presenting a Venue Awareness session in the following weeks. It was the first time the GCE team have engaged with Spotty Dog and Marnie was amazed at all the industry support she was not aware of. “I didn’t know any of the things we talked
about existed,” she said. Passion and years of hard work have taken the Spotty Dog team a long way from their early days at Hobart’s night markets. Set amongst warehouses and commercial buildings in Albert Rd Moonah is the Albert Brewery - named after its location. Another Tasmanian family-owned
It is exciting to see these breweries emerging in the northern suburbs and creating new stories in the hospitality identity of Hobart.
