Nabatanzi got motivated to seek membership for her daughter in a youth-led drama group, where her daughter Birungi was accepted based on the ability she had demonstrated at the Teens2Teens competitions. Later, her daughter got a chance for a second presentation, and she managed to catch the eye of the Director of Kibuli Modern High School. Her daughter had just finished her Primary Leaving Examinations and the Director promised her a full scholarship if she performed well in her examination. When the results came back, her daughter had passed with flying colours. The promise of the full scholarship was fulfilled, and her daughter joined the school where she continues to demonstrate the musical talent unearthed by Teens2Teens.

Laura’s Story of Change from Kenya: “I am Woman, I am Mother (Part 2/3)
“Carolina for Kibera (CFK) was set up to empower the community to take lead in finding solutions to their challenges and alleviate poverty. Through the Girls Empowerment Programme, the organisation has developed a project known as Funzo, focusing on helping teenage mothers and expectant youth to realise their right to education by encouraging them to re-enrol or remain in school even through pregnancy. “When CFK recruited me through the Funzo project for teenage mothers, I grasped the opportunityto secure my future. I attended the safe spaces sessions with other teenage mothers, which were led by our mentors. They trained us on different capacity strengthening building blocks including counselling, the importance of education, contraceptives, childcare, hygiene, and ways of avoiding stress and how to cope with the reality. Throughout the training sessions, I used to go with my daughter, and they were very accommodating. Whenever there was a donation, I was lucky enough to receive it, and so far, I have received foodstuff, monthly sanitary towel hygiene pack, and free medical care for my daughter and I. CFK has been my second family.”
