2022 Crop - UK Export Quality
Harvest Overview • The UK had one of its earliest harvests on record, helped along by extremely dry sunny weather throughout June and July. In England we saw a new record daytime temperature of 40.3C for one day in July, the first time the 40-degree mark has ever been exceeded. However, unlike much of mainland Europe, in general temperatures even at their peak were not sufficient to cause any damage to our malting or milling crops. • Harvest was largely finished for the southern half of the UK by mid-August and with no rain breaks in the weather, quality was consistently high across all types. Yield also exceeded expectations; many farms reported new record yield for winter sown crops and spring crops were not far behind. • Wheat has been characterised by very high bushel weights and correspondingly slightly lower than average proteins. We project the UK to have an exportable wheat surplus this season of about 2.25 mln tonnes which will be the highest figure for several years. • Barley also performed well with very high calibration rates in spring crops. Propino has now almost disappeared from the UK leaving Planet and Laureate to dominate the export market. The combination of good yields and high calibration rates means we estimate the UK will have an exportable malting barley surplus of about 650,000 MT which is very much at the high end of our typical availability year-on-year.

2022 Report - Wheat • In the South of England, the wheat harvest was gathered in perfect weather conditions. Rain in August is often the thing that spoils our otherwise good crops but with none falling this year from start to finish, both the visual appearance and tested qualities of our wheat are excellent. • Top grade Group 1 milling wheat at 13% protein will remain in tight supply domestically as many of the Group 1 samples fell below this level. However, this means a higher-than-normal availability of 11/11.5 protein cargoes (UKP) all with high kiloweights and Hagbergs. As these cargoes will be derived from Group 1 types, they will have exceptional useability in continental flour grists this year. • Soft Wheat samples (UKS) are of similar high quality but suffer from lower availability as the grown acreage has shrunk dramatically in recent years.

2022 Report - Barley The UK’s spring barley was under some stress in the very dry June-July period and some crops were lost in that time, however the majority came through very well and produced excellent samples. The dry harvest period means germination is very secure and the overall appearance of samples are disease free, bright in colour and clean. Planet and Laureate will dominate the UK’s export programme again this season, with Propino having almost completely disappeared. Bartholomews have now drawn thousands of samples from farms right across the South of England and the results from all this testing reveal a highly marketable crop. Proteins are generally somewhat lower than recent seasons, but there should be no difficulty in shipping cargoes safely above the widely preferred min 9.5% level. Laureate is proving to be a consistent performer and is the pick of the varieties again this year. Planet, having dominated the market for several years, is now starting to show signs of agronomic weakness in the field and this is reflected this year again in slightly lower retentions and yields on farm. There will be a marked shift away from Planet to Laureate for the 2023 Crop but we expect Planet to remain supported on farm for at least another season - eventually making way for the new potential entrant Skyway in subsequent years.
