2022 Report - Barley The UK’s spring barley was under some stress in the very dry June-July period and some crops were lost in that time, however the majority came through very well and produced excellent samples. The dry harvest period means germination is very secure and the overall appearance of samples are disease free, bright in colour and clean. Planet and Laureate will dominate the UK’s export programme again this season, with Propino having almost completely disappeared. Bartholomews have now drawn thousands of samples from farms right across the South of England and the results from all this testing reveal a highly marketable crop. Proteins are generally somewhat lower than recent seasons, but there should be no difficulty in shipping cargoes safely above the widely preferred min 9.5% level. Laureate is proving to be a consistent performer and is the pick of the varieties again this year. Planet, having dominated the market for several years, is now starting to show signs of agronomic weakness in the field and this is reflected this year again in slightly lower retentions and yields on farm. There will be a marked shift away from Planet to Laureate for the 2023 Crop but we expect Planet to remain supported on farm for at least another season - eventually making way for the new potential entrant Skyway in subsequent years.
