For many, the holiday season is a time to gather with family and catch up over delicious food, drive around town looking at Christmas lights, shop for gifts and rock around the Christmas tree while belting out iconic Christmas songs. But if you’re looking for another fun post-dinner facts to share with the fam, Christmas trivia may be just what you need.
SANTA CLAUS WAS KNOWN AS SINTERKLAAS IN DUTCH Christmas is all about receiving gifts from Santa Claus for youngsters. However, how did Santa Claus come to be? St. Nicholas is the inspiration for Santa Claus. St. Nicholas, according to legend, was a Christian bishop who helped the destitute and needy. He also adored youngsters and enjoyed surreptitiously giving them gifts. As word of his story spread, he was dubbed Sinterklaas, which became Santa Claus. We’re guessing you didn’t know either! You undoubtedly already know that St. Nicholas was the inspiration for Santa Claus. The saint wasn’t a bearded man in a red costume; that was a later legend. The Christian bishop of the fourth century gave up his considerable property to the poor and freed women from enslavement. Sinter Klaas is his Dutch moniker, which was later shortened to Santa Claus in English.
RUDOLPH WAS A MARKETING PLOY When the Montgomery Ward department company asked one of its copywriters to produce a Christmas narrative for youngsters that the store could distribute as a promotion, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was born. In 1964, the delightful film featuring the island of misfit toys and Herbie the elf premiered on television (and in our hearts). Rudolph was almost given the names Rollo or Reginald, but they didn’t have the same ring to them. His crew, on the other hand, had a long list of different names. Flossie, Glossie, Racer, Pacer, Scratcher, Feckless, Ready, Steady, and Fireball have all been given to them.
