QUALITY AND QUANTITY TIME BEING A FATHER IS ABOUT BEING THERE

I

n our last issue, I wrote about what my mother and my wife have done to enrich my life. If you’re a mother, I hope you got a phone call from your kids on Mother’s Day. You definitely deserve it. As for my household, my children’s annual practice of making my wife breakfast in bed was a success. This month, it only makes sense to talk about fatherhood. I need to take a different approach for two reasons: 1) Because I’m a father myself, and 2) because my mother raised my sister and I as a single mom, so we didn’t have a dad around the house. Father’s Day is another reminder of the sacrifices my mom made for us, because she had to play both roles. Being a parent is one of the most difficult things you can do — and that’s with help. Doing it as a single parent is a different story. If you’re a single parent, I certainly pay tribute to you. I put a huge focus on spending quality and quantity time with my kids. They’re both at the age where they still think their dad is cool. When they’re teenagers, they’ll want to be off with their friends all the time. I have to take advantage of the present. That’s one of my main goals as a father — to be involved and present. It’s a decision I made a long time ago. I only had my mother, and she did a wonderful job raising us. But as long as my children have both parents, I’m going to make sure they experience the full benefits, and that means really being there.

That decision caused me to make a few sacrifices with work. A few years

ago, I had three physical therapy practices. I just worked all the

time. I really enjoy helping people with physical therapy, and there were a lot of advantages to having all three. But I wasn’t spending enough time with my kids. I decided to sell two of them. I realized I was never going to get that time back. Time just flies at this age. Like I said, when they’re this young, they still want to hang out with me. That won’t last forever. But even when they’re teenagers who want to be with their friends all the time, I hope they know that I’ll be there for them just as much as I am now. Being a father isn’t just about spending time, though. My purpose is to love my children, but not necessarily to be their friend. If I can teach them to be good people and to work hard for what they want, I will have done my job. To me, that’s the mission of a father. In the meantime, I’ll continue to spend quality and quantity time with them — quality by doing things we both love, like coaching my daughter’s softball team and my son’s baseball and lacrosse team, and quantity by spending as much of it with them as possible. Like I said, for me, it’s just about being there.

Thank You!

Welcome our new physical therapist!

“Wow, what a wonderful experience. When I first arrived at Cornerstone, I was at 30 percent with my patella tendon tears after surgery. I arrived with a crutch in one hand and despair and doubt in the other. But now, WOW — no despair and no doubts. I can run, skip, hop, and jump. Thank you, Cornerstone. I will recommend all I know to this facility.”

FIND RELIEF FROM SCIATICA 4 EXERCISES YOU CAN DO AT HOME

S

ciatica is a painful condition that affects millions of people across the country. It’s defined by pain that travels from the lower back down through the leg via the

sciatic nerve pathway. It’s often accompanied by tingling, numbness, and weakness. In and of itself, sciatica is not a condition, but a symptom of something else, such as a lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. Finding relief can be a challenge. However, there are four exercises you can do to ease pain and discomfort: EXERCISE 1: LUMBAR ROTATION While lying in bed or on the floor, slowly rock your knees toward the side with pain. If your pain is in the middle of your back, then rock your legs from side to side. Allow your lower back to rotate to the side. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions at least two times per day. EXERCISE 2: POSTERIOR PELVIC TILT While lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on your bed or floor, flatten your back by tightening your stomach muscles and buttocks. By tightening your abdominals, you are moving, or mobilizing, the lumbar

spine vertebrae. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions, holding each repetition for three seconds. Perform at least two times per day. EXERCISE 3: BRIDGING While lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on your bed or floor, raise your buttocks off the surface, keeping your stomach muscles tight. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions, holding each repetition for three seconds. Perform at least two times per day.

EXERCISE 4: PRESS UPS While lying on your stomach on your bed or floor, press your upper body upward, keeping your hips in contact with the bed or floor. Keep the muscles of your low back and buttocks relaxed throughout the movement, resulting in an arching of your back. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions, holding each repetition for three seconds. Perform at least two times per day.

Yellowstone: Where the Wild Things Are

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE THE UNSPOILED NATURAL MAJESTY OF YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another.

As far as getaway destinations go, Yellowstone National Park, sprawling across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, is a little more expansive. More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family. Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions averaging a whopping 130 vertical feet. Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, take a hike along one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The views, with clay cliff faces and tree-covered mountains in every direction, are unlike any other. Also, be sure to investigate the Grand Prismatic Spring, which, besides its otherworldly rainbow waters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S. For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves.

Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, Yellowstone is a no-brainer.
