D eena Palacioslugo’s journey is a powerful story of resilience, faith, and transformation. At 46 years old, she has battled substance abuse most of her life, with her struggles culminating in her recent success in turning her life around through the support of Mary Hall Freedom Village. Deena’s history with addiction includes a long-standing battle with methamphetamine. Between 2018 and 2021, she participated in drug court, which planted the initial seed of recovery in her heart. Her graduation from drug court marked a significant milestone, but unfortunately, her journey back into dependency was swift. The day she graduated, she went to the liquor store, and it didn’t take long before alcohol dependency took hold again. Within a year, she had relapsed into meth use. Her struggles intensified when she was placed on felony probation and subsequently caught another charge, which led her to Mary Hall Freedom Village. This time, her experience was different—something inside her had shifted. Just two days into her stay, she realized she didn’t want to return to her hometown and its toxic environment. Instead, she made a pivotal decision: she applied for transitional housing at MHFV, and five months in, she signed a lease, taking her first real step toward independence. Deena credits her faith and the support of MHFV for her transformation. She asked God to remove her desire to use substances, and through prayer and the blessings of the staff at MHFV, she experienced that change. Today, she proudly celebrates over two years of sobriety, with no pending charges or probation. She has been living in her own place since November 1st, and her life has been fundamentally renewed. Reflecting on her journey, Deena shares, “The blessings haven’t stopped.” Her gratitude is evident, and her story now fuels her desire to give back. She feels called to serve others and has expressed her passion to become part of the MHFV staff, helping women who are still fighting their own battles with addiction. “This job was from God,” Deena affirms, emphasizing that her calling is to share hope and inspire change in others. Her experience proves that with faith, determination, and the right support, recovery is possible—and it can lead to a life filled with purpose and service. Deena Palacioslugo: From Struggle to Service – A Journey of Recovery at Mary Hall Freedom Village
Deena’s story is a testament to the transformative power of grace and community, and she continues to inspire everyone around her with her resilience and unwavering hope.

Taking Action on the Opioid Crisis:
T he opioid crisis is a major public health challenge with devastating consequences. Opioids, including prescription painkillers, heroin, and fentanyl, have fueled addiction, overdoses, and fatalities. Laboratories play a crucial role in combating the crisis through advanced opioid detection, monitoring, and treatment. They utilize biological samples like urine, blood, and saliva for accurate drug testing. Rapid, cost-effective immunoassays, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), are used for initial screening, followed by confirmatory tests like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography- mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for precise identification. Hair and nail testing also offer extended detection windows for retrospective analysis of opioid use.
In addition to drug testing, laboratories support Medication- Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs, which combine behavioral therapy with FDA-approved medications to treat opioid addiction. Methadone reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms under supervision, while buprenorphine blocks opioid effects and minimizes withdrawal. Regular drug testing ensures patient compliance with MAT, optimizing treatment outcomes. To prevent opioid misuse, laboratories assist healthcare providers and regulatory agencies by monitoring prescription drug use. Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) electronically track opioid prescriptions to detect misuse, while urine drug monitoring ensures adherence to treatment plans, detects diversion, and assesses the effectiveness of pain management. Laboratories also play an important role in opioid research and development, conducting genetic studies to explore variations in opioid metabolism and advancing non-opioid pain therapies to reduce reliance on traditional opioids.

Collaborating with public health agencies, laboratories implement harm reduction strategies, such as drug checking services that test illicit drugs for contaminants, and public health campaigns that raise awareness of opioid risks and responsible prescribing. The opioid crisis demands a multifaceted response, and laboratories are at the forefront. Through precise testing, MAT support, prescription monitoring, research, and harm reduction efforts, they play a vital role in combating opioid addiction. Continued innovation and evidence-based strategies will help mitigate the crisis, fostering a healthier and safer futur e.

Natalie Price: Finding Sobriety and Strength at Mary Hall Freedom Village
N atalie Price's journey to recovery at Mary Hall Freedom Village is a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering support of a community dedicated to healing. From a young age, surrounded by a culture of alcohol and partying, Natalie internalized the harmful belief that substance abuse was normal. Her mother's lifestyle, where drinking and partying were the norm, shaped her perception of acceptable behavior. The stark reality of her situation began to dawn on Natalie at 15. Becoming a mother so young, coupled with her enrollment in Job Corps, offered a glimpse beyond the familiar patterns. The stark contrast between the structured environment of Job Corps and her previous life forced her to confront the unsustainable path she'd been on. Attending an AA meeting was a turning point, though not one she initially embraced. The lack of seriousness in her approach led to her dismissal from the program, a setback that ultimately propelled her down a dangerous path. By 17, Natalie was embroiled in the cycle of selling drugs and heavy drinking. She fell into a relationship with an older man who initially offered support, but the relationship quickly devolved into a harmful pattern of physical abuse. Pregnancy at that point caused her to slow down, but the underlying issues persisted until the physical abuse escalated. The abuse's impact was profound. This marked a turning point, driving her to seek help and ultimately leading her to Mary Hall Freedom Village. Natalie's story is a a struggle against societal norms, family patterns, and the insidious grip of addiction. At Mary Hall Freedom Village, Natalie has found a safe space to confront her past trauma, rebuild her life, and discover a new path towards sobriety and hope. The dedicated staff and supportive community at Mary Hall Freedom Village have provided her with the tools and resources she needs to heal and thrive. With continued commitment and support, Natalie is determined to build a brighter future for herself and her children. Her journey is far from over, but the foundation for a life free from addiction and abuse is being laid.
Please ask for help, I didn’t know it was out there. -Natalie Price
