T hanks to funding from the county’s Local Development Council, a library on wheels is on the road visiting underserved communities and serving customers lacking transportation to the nearby Severn Library. The vehicle called Twig (think smaller than a branch) is bringing programs, resources and a collection of books to residents. The vehicle’s bold exterior design is the brainchild of local artist Comacell Brown. You can find Twig’s schedule at aacpl.net/services/Severn .

The Twig outreach vehicle aims to transform communities and promote awareness of the invaluable resources offered by the library system. By reaching out to underserved residents and delivering a wealth of books, digital resources and services directly to their doorsteps, Twig is actively breaking down barriers and bridging the gap between people and knowledge. Our mission is to empower individuals with the necessary tools to enhance their personal growth, education and overall well-being. The outreach vehicle at AACPL has already visited Anne Arundel County Public School classrooms, family support centers, public housing and mobile home neighborhoods, farmers’ markets, child development centers, parks, food pantry sites, camps, children clubs, neighborhood festivals, gardening centers, coffee shops and more. Since its launch, Severn Library staff have made 116 outreach visits and served 3,114 customers. Twig outreach is also committed to providing regular library services to the community through recurring weekly visits to various locations. Our

weekly stops include The Boys and Girls Clubs in both Meade Village and the Severn Center and Sarah’s House, where we aim to engage families and foster a love for reading. Also, we serve local commuters through weekly visits to the bus stop at Arundel Mills Mall, ensuring that the library is available to those on the go and possibly lacking transportation to the library. Our outreach efforts extend to seniors as well, with dedicated weekly visits to the senior center situated at the Severn Center. At every Twig outreach stop, individuals can not only access and return books but also sign up for library cards and utilize our Chromebooks. A customer from the bus stop recently said, “This library actually found ME, as I was waiting at the bus stop located at the Arundel Mills Mall… Something told me to stop by your guy’s book truck, which was parked that day right at the bus stop. The woman and man who helped me were very kind and they even had free books they gave away, and I got one. This was perfect timing for me as I had told God that I had just been wanting to start reading again…I am so excited for this new chapter at a new library.”
