MAY 2024

commute to the gym is a walk down the stairs, and I’ve found early morning, as my family is preparing for their days, is the best time for me to get a great workout. If you have even the tiniest bit of discipline, this app can be an effective way to set up a routine for yourself. I’ve also started eating better. Even though I don’t need to lose a bunch of weight, eating enough protein and opting for a cleaner diet has contributed to my strength gains. I have been following the slow-carb diet, which eliminates most carbs and focuses on veggies, beans, and proteins. You even get one cheat day, so if you want Twinkies for breakfast that morning, you’re good to go as long as you get your protein in. No one is perfect. Sometimes, when you open the fridge and see the mac and cheese you made for your children staring back at you, it looks pretty tasty. Sometimes, it’s hard to find the motivation to lift your weights. Be gentle on yourself and give yourself grace. Don’t beat yourself up throughout this journey; just jump back on track. Once you have gotten into the groove of working out and eating healthy, you won’t feel right missing it. I feel extra tired and sluggish if I don’t work out now. It’s not always easy to establish healthy habits, but I’m living proof it’s possible to create and maintain the correct routine for your goals. Get your reps in, focus on how you feel, be conscious of your dietary choices, and allow yourself a mac and cheese occasionally. –Kyle Matthews

Get Fit, Dad Style How I Got in the Best Shape of My Life

“No, I’m doing great. I don’t think we need to run any faster. This pace seems perfect.”

I remember how rewarding it felt to put in the work and the miles and see my times drop. Even though we were running individually, track still instilled that essential team mentality for sports and life. After high school, I set a rule for myself: No one needs to run more than eight miles. And I haven’t run over eight miles since. While I’m no longer competing, I work out regularly. I have officially completed a full year of workouts. It’s much harder than it sounds with work and kids, but in a year, I missed more than one workout in a row only once or twice. I achieved this consistency by finding the right time in the morning to work out and an app that changed the game for me. The StrongLifts 5x5 program and app is designed for beginners and grows and adapts with you. I see it as my quasi-trainer, and it has allowed me to stay on track. The app gives you simple exercises, ups and drops your weight automatically, and has a timer built in so you can move through each activity without thinking about it. My

Don’t let the words I shout while running with my nephew, the high school track star, fool you. Even though I’m not much of a runner anymore, I’m in the best shape of my life. I always participated in sports when I was younger, and now, as a father and business owner, I’ve turned my focus to getting in shape and eating right. By staying dedicated, finding the right tools, and being gentle with myself, I’m proud to say I’ve never felt better. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and could be the springboard you’ve been looking for to kick-start your fitness journey. I’m not an expert, but if a busy dad who’s as clumsy as me can achieve the muscle gains and clean diet I’ve seen over this year, you can, too. Growing up, I started with team sports like tee-ball and soccer. I moved to cross country and track and participated in those for the rest of my high school days.

“Sweater weather” may take on a whole new meaning for you this month. As the summer temperatures climb and you start switching out your coats for tank tops, it’s time to reach for your favorite sweaters. Though you won’t be wearing them soon, it’s the perfect season to store your sweaters with care. When you make room in your closet for lighter wear, you must properly clean and store your winter clothes, especially those made of finer fabrics like cashmere or suede. Prep Your Sweaters for Summer Hibernation SWEATER SEASON ISN’T OVER YET

This year brings a new wave of interior design trends, transforming homes into havens of style and functionality. These trends offer a glimpse into the evolving landscape of interior design, but they’re not entirely new. Let’s explore the key trends shaping the homes of today and tomorrow. SUSTAINABLE LIVING TAKES CENTER STAGE. Sustainable and eco-friendly materials are gaining popularity, reflecting our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint in our living spaces. This isn’t new, as many homeowners and renters try their best to find and refurbish furniture made of recycled materials and use energy-efficient appliances and lighting. This trend continues as we embrace more sustainable designs. BIOPHILIC DESIGN CONTRIBUTES TO TRANQUIL SPACES. Biophilic design incorporates nature within a living space, such as putting plants in living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Integrating this and other natural elements like water features and ample natural light will help blend these spaces. The trend also includes plant-inspired textiles, e.g., pillows, curtains, upholstery, etc. These details bring tranquility and continue a tradition of melding the inside and outside without harsh boundaries. MAXIMALISM MAKES A COMEBACK. The minimalism of the 2010s is out. Maximalism is in, which means bold and vibrant colors and eclectic decor choices are gaining momentum. More people are embracing the idea that more is more, creating visually stunning spaces that reflect their personalities and diverse interests rather than opting for a sterile, monochrome ambiance. HOME OFFICES EVOLVE. The rise of remote work has transformed the way we use homes. In 2024, the home office continues to evolve to accommodate this work-from-home hybrid model. Versatile yet ergonomic furniture, innovative but out-of-sight storage solutions, and personalized technology integration are becoming staples, creating home environments conducive to work and everyday living. MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE ENABLES FLEXIBLE LIVING. With space optimization becoming increasingly important, multifunctional furniture is gaining popularity. Homes must adapt to various needs, so why shouldn’t your furniture do the same? Sofa beds, convertible tables, and modular storage units are some popular ways to ensure your furniture is efficient and beautiful. Functional and Sustainable Trends for Your Home in 2024

One of the most common problems we see with people’s

sweaters is moth damage. Moths can be incredibly destructive to clothing and other garments, and it’s a regular clothing woe this time of year. These insects are attracted to the stuff on your clothes, like body oils, food

stains, and skin cells, not your clothes themselves. So, the best way to preserve your sweaters and other winter garments is to clean them thoroughly before packing them. At Janet Davis Cleaners, we know just how to keep all your favorite sweaters soft and comfy until you’re ready to don them again. If you’re unsure whether particular sweaters in your closet or dresser are already clean, give them the pinch test. If you feel our tissue paper, they have been cleaned, but if not, you’ll want to bring them our way before putting them away for the season. We’ll take great care of your sweaters, allowing you to rest easy when you store them.

Our customers have come to expect super sweater service from us, like Carla White.

“I dropped off my sweater set, which wer stained with grease spots. They were able to remove the stains, folded them neatly with paper inside, placed them in a Janet Davis Gift Bag, and tied them. I was very pleased. Thanks again for your service,” she said. To help you get your sweaters ready from summer storage, we’ll clean three of your sweaters for the price of two all through May.

THE HANGER SHORTAGE CONTINUES

GO TO THE PROS The best laundry hack of all is letting the professionals take care of the work for you. At Janet Davis Cleaners, we offer a complete wash, fold, and dry service so you can get your clothes back looking new and get your time back. Leave us your laundry basket by dropping it off or using our convenient pick-up service. We will clean and dry your items using top-of-the-line machines, and when they are done, we will fold them immediately. We always neatly wrap them up in plastic before returning them to you. Ready to lighten your load? Visit janetdaviscleaners.com/ laundry-services to learn more about our laundry services and to sign up for a pick-up.

SEPARATE SOCKS We will probably never solve the mystery of disappearing socks, but you can use mesh bags for delicates to wash and keep track of them. Try clipping a mesh bag onto your hampers for socks, and then throw the whole bag in the wash. LOAD LIGHTLY Smaller loads of laundry are more efficient. Washers clean clothes best when they have room to disperse detergent and tumble to remove dirt and stains. The smaller the load, the easier it is to complete the task. FOLD FIRST When your clothes have dried, fold or hang them as soon as possible. This will keep your home free of clothing piles

Are you tired of stubborn stains and a mountain of laundry? Properly washing your clothes can be a big chore, especially if you are dealing with specialty fabrics, tricky stains, or the wrong detergent. These at-home laundry tips let you turn your laundry game from drab to fab. SORT PROPERLY If you want your clothes to look better and last longer, it’s best to clean them following their specific care instructions to avoid damage. Start with sorting by their soil level or the type of fabric. Separate different types of clothing that can be washed together, always remaining mindful of their colors.

It’s unpredictable and exciting to see when the bubbles finally burst; you can even make it a counting game.

The science of this bouncing is an excellent opportunity to explore how bubbles form. The kids will question why these bubbles bounce,

To start this bubbly adventure, you need a simple concoction: 4 tablespoons of water, 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Gently mix the water and soap, then add the sugar and mix until dissolved. (You can easily scale up the recipe for a larger crowd using cups instead of tablespoons in the same ratios.) Now, the real magic happens. Kids can dip their bubble wands into the mixture and blow bubbles into the air. Now, though, the bubbles won’t pop.

so why not make it educational? Explain that sugar fortifies the bubble’s elastic surface (thus raising surface tension); this answer may lead to other questions, and kids won’t feel lectured because you’re answering their questions.
