JULY 2022
PRACTICING MINDFUL PARENTING PARENTING: THE GREATEST GIFT
As parents, our overarching goal is to bring out the best in our kids. Many say there’s no such thing as a perfect parent — and they’re right. We all struggle with what's right and wrong in the world of parenting and what could be done differently or better. But, there is no cookie cutter parent! July is Purposeful Parenting Month, a time in which parents are reminded to be present, engaged, and responsive in the lives of our children. Our sons and daughters depend on us for so many things that it can sometimes be overwhelming, yet it’s the greatest reward in the world to raise young lives. Our children are everything! For me, purposeful parenting all goes back to mindfulness. We must be vigilant and intentional in our actions. So often, kids have a difficult time articulating what they are feeling, even if they are at the age where they are able to speak. Feelings and emotions can be confusing — even for adults, and putting them into actions and words is tricky. When this happens, it’s important to be mindful of the moment and the circumstances surrounding what they are attempting to communicate. Sometimes, we may know exactly what our child needs, even if they aren’t necessarily displaying it. Other times, we may feel in the dark, and that can be frustrating. So many times, I’ve found myself caught up in what my child, either Finn or Harlow, is saying or doing while upset or in distress, and I’ve gotten caught up in that initial stress reaction to the situation. It’s painful to see your child confused or worked up. But, by taking a deep breath and remembering to be mindful, more often than not,
I’m able to sort out what they are really trying to tell me, even if it’s not what they’re saying.
Understandably, we as parents tend to be in a million different places at once — or we try to be, anyway! But in these moments, it’s crucial to be present for the child and to make them a priority. To be mindful, we must show we love them, recognize the passion and purpose in their hearts, and empower them to be responsible. A great example of purposeful parenting is anytime I take my kids on camping trips. Sometimes, the initial transition and break from their routine can be brutal, and while we planned on having a great time, we end up with cranky, irritable kids. This is when it’s important to keep in mind this is not your child acting out; it’s their tiredness and disruption from routine acting out. I’m a firm believer that parenting relies heavily on understanding your child and their needs. Loving and listening are two of the greatest gifts we can give our children.

flexibility, and showing courage to lead. He follows up with examples of companies that embody all five of these principles: Victorinox, the creator of the Swiss Army knife, Bill Gates and Microsoft, and the GPS company Garmin. Chapter 5: Building a Culture of Trust A healthy work culture is based on trust. If your workers sense a lack of trust, that affects efficiency, since no one will feel comfortable voicing their concerns or mistakes. Ford Motor Company is a perfect example. Before 2006, the now-former CEO would reprimand and penalize workers who brought him bad information. This caused an unhealthy work environment and led to lower productivity. Sinek offers tips on how to create a culture where your employees are comfortable and confident. "The Infinite Game" teaches you that business is an endless game where you have to overcome many challenges. Successful businesses play the infinite game, constantly improving the business to become better. Sinek provides tips, solutions, and examples of how your business can thrive while playing the game. "The Infinite Game" by Simon Sinek is among the greatest motivational books you can get your hands on. He gives readers an inside scoop on the importance of adopting an “infinite mindset” while “playing the game” of business. Let’s look at some of the chapters that can help you and your business. Chapter 1: Business Isn’t a Finite Game The first chapter discusses why running a business isn’t a finite game. It focuses on how profit and income aren’t the only ways
to measure success. Profit means nothing if you’re unable to survive current and future difficulties. This is why business is an infinite game — you don’t want to create something to “win” (finite); you want to build a foundation that will remain for future generations (infinite). Chapter 2: Essential Practices Sinek explains the strategies you need to play the infinite game. These skills include developing a “just cause,” creating trusting teams, studying your rivals, preparing for

DID YOU HEAR THAT?
Inspired by TasteOfHome.com AND BLUE TIRAMISU RED, WHITE,
July 18 is World Listening Day and the celebration of Canadian composer Raymond Murray Schafer’s birthday. Schafer is known as the founder of acoustic ecology, or soundscape studies, which explores the relationship between humans and their environment via sound. The ability to hear and perceive sounds is amazing but also translates over to how humans interact with each other — a large part of this is through listening to others, to both their words and actions. Sometimes, great listening means paying attention to what’s going on underneath the surface. As discussed in the cover story, it can be difficult to know exactly what a child is trying to communicate, but the same proves to be true for adults — they either don’t communicate what is going on or have trouble doing so. As humans, we have a tendency to bottle up our feelings, and as a result, we display emotions, such as anger, even when what we really may be feeling is hurt, sadness, or suffering. As the old saying goes, “Nobody is perfect,” and as part of being a better listener, it’s important to remember that humans are all flawed and to provide grace. You never know what a person is going through, and it’s best to embrace and control the space between listening and our response — that’s where the actual listening takes place. In some situations, to become a better listener, we need to peel back layers to actually hear what someone is trying to say. And of course, the general rules all apply — don’t speak when someone else is speaking, play a passive role, and actively engage with follow-up questions and affirming body language. THE VALUE OF SITTING BACK AND JUST LISTENING
Ingredients
• 3 cups raspberries • 3 cups blackberries • 2 cups blueberries
• 2 cups strawberries, sliced • 1 1/3 cups sugar, divided
• 4 tsp orange zest • 1 cup orange juice • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 2 8-oz cartons mascarpone cheese • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 7-oz packages crisp ladyfinger cookies
Directions
1. In a large bowl, gently mix all berries with 1/3 cup sugar, orange zest, and orange juice. Cover and refrigerate for 45 minutes. 2. In a medium bowl, beat the cream until soft peaks form. 3. In another medium bowl, mix mascarpone cheese, vanilla, and 1 cup sugar. Gradually fold in whipped cream. 4. Over a shallow bowl, drain the berries. Dip the ladyfingers in the leftover juice and allow the excess to drip off. 5. In a 13x9-inch dish, place half the ladyfingers in a single layer. Add a layer with half of the berries and then half the mascarpone mixture. Repeat layers, starting with ladyfingers. 6. Cover and refrigerate overnight before serving.
Listening is a virtue! Sometimes, even if it’s only silence, there is still so much listening to be done!

Page 4 Oceanside Activities to Try This Summer
OCEANSIDE ACTIVITIES THE ENTIRE FAMILY CAN ENJOY
The summer season is officially underway and many Americans are planning to take a trip to the beach to celebrate the occasion. If you’re going on a family vacation to the ocean for an extended period of time, you may be worried about keeping everyone entertained. That’s why we put together a list of some of our favorite oceanside activities to try this summer. Your summer vacation will be filled with fun and excitement after trying some of these great activities! Get active. There’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on the beach and listening to the calm repetition of the waves, but maybe you want a little more excitement by the
ocean. If that’s the case, there are plenty of sports to try. You can bring a football and throw it around in the water or on the beach. You can buy a net and set up a game of beach volleyball to get everyone involved, or you can try one of the many new beachside sports hitting the market like TidalBall, pickleball, and Spikeball. TidalBall is the beach version of cornhole, so if you haven’t played it yet, you definitely want to check it out. Experience nature. The wildlife and environment of the beach are most likely drastically different from what you can experience back home, so make an effort to see all you can. At many beaches, you’ll be able
to see dolphins, whales, and sea rays from the shore. You can also look in the sand for crabs and small crustaceans. By simply standing still and taking in all of the sights and sounds of the ocean, you’ll gain a greater appreciation for the surroundings. Ride the waves. You don’t need to be an experienced surfer to venture into the water on a board. Of course, you can take surfing lessons at many beaches, but you can also get in the water on a bodyboard for a thrilling experience. Additionally, you can rent kayaks or paddleboards if you want to be on the water, but not necessarily in it.
