IMPROVING SUSTAINABILITY AND SAVING YOUR BUSINESS MONEY
The Arch Company is committed to improving sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint. The arches are a great example of reusing and recycling. Most were constructed over a hundred years ago, using local bricks. Retrofitting existing structures is much greener than creating new ones. As well as focusing on our own sustainability, we want to provide advice and sup- port for our customers on how they can do the same. Making small changes to your business can reduce your environmental footprint and save you money.
1. REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Small interventions like programmable thermostat, LED lighting and motion sensors can reduce your energy use and your costs. Typical paybacks for installing LED or energy-efficient lightbulbs are 1-2 years, so although they may be more expensive than normal lightbulbs, after that time you will be saving money.
If you rely on deliveries to or from a local customer base, could that be carried out by a low carbon alternative, like bike couriers or electric vehicles? Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are exempt from extra costs like the London Congestion Charge, the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge and vehicle excise duty (VED). The cost of running an electric van is typically half as much, or better, than a diesel van. 2. USING FEWER POLLUTING VEHICLES
The costs of sending waste to landfill are increasing. Reducing the amount you throw away and increasing the amount you recycle will reduce your waste removal costs. Carrying out a waste audit is a good first step to provide information on how much you recycle versus throw in landfill. A growing number of companies offer to buy recyclable waste such as paper or plastic. 3. REDUCING WASTE

Faucet aerators and low-flow plumbing fixtures are cost-effective and enable equivalent washing capacity whilst using less water. If you have a meter, you can keep track of your water usage and identify potential leaks.
Renewable energy comes from natural resources that can be easily replenished, like wind, solar or hydroelectric. There are several good value green energy tariffs available, or companies that only supply green energy. They are not necessarily more expensive than tariffs that burn fossil fuels, and prices tend to be more stable.
