acter. His intercession must be the most acceptable of all supplications— and (he more like our prayer is to Christ’s, the sweeter it will be. While petitions for ourselves, w ill be ac cepted, our pleadings for 'others, hav ing in -them more of the fruit of the Spirit, will be the sweetest oblation that we can offer to God. Remember that intercessory prayer prevails. What wonders it has wrought! • —Charles H. Spurgeon. 15. We Are Immortal “We know that . . . we shall be like him . . . And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself” (1 John 3:2, 3). The range of our threescore years and ten is not the limit of our life. Our life is not a landlocked lake en closed within the shore lines of sev enty years. It is an arm of the sea. And so we must build for those larger waters. We are immortal! How, then, shall we live today in prospect of eternal tomorrow?—J. H. Jowett. 16. My Longings “ I will pour water upon him that is thirsty” (Isa. 44:3). Everything about me which makes me h u m a n is a form of thirst. My speculation is the thirst of my under standing. My love is the thirst of my heart. My aspiration is the thirst of my fancy. My prayer is the thirst of my spirit. My longings are all prophe cies. I could not long for 'anything if I had reached finality. Why do I seek so many things that are not here? . . . It is because the world is not my environment. . . . My thirst is the prophecy of an environment yet to be; I long for Thy Spirit, O Lord, and thereby I know that Thou longest for me.—George Matheson. 17. Divine Sufficiency “Be . . . of good courage . . , for the Lord . . . doth go with thee” (Deut. 31:6). Why should we fear when we have a God who is both friend and advo cate? Why should we become “faint” in jlje presence of dangers, either real or fancied? We have a God who is a very present help in time of trouble. And we should remember that we are told not to be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.—Brethren Evangelist. 18. Faith's Expression “ Faith, if it hath not works, is dead” (Jas. 2:17). I knelt to pray when d&y was done; And prayed, “O Lord, bless everyone; Lift from each saddened heart t h e pain, And let the sick be well again.”

12. At Rest in His Presence “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psa. 91:1). The world hastens on. Saved and unsaved are swept into the maelstrom of ceaseless activity, highpitched and unrelaxed. Yet in the very heart of a cyclone is a place of absolute stillness, and in the heart of every Christian there should be that place of quiet calm at the Sav iour’s feet. It is true that we have our part to play in the daily routine of life. A multitude of duties face us day by day. These will be met* with greater strength and courage, if we take time to meditate upon God’s Word and to kneel in prayer at His throne of grace. —Selected. 13. For His Approval “He that judgeth me is the Lord” (1 Cor. 4:4). There is a story of a young composer whose music was being performed. He kept his eye fixed intently on one man in the audience, watching exery ex pression that played upon his features. It was his teacher. He cared more for the slightest mark of favor on his face than for all the applause of the great company. So in all our life we should watch the face of Christ, caring only that He should be pleased. If we live to win His approval, we shall not be afraid to have all our deeds laid bare at the last judgment throne. “Make me, Pure One, as Thou art, Pure in mind, and soul, and heart; Never satisfied with less Than Thy perfect holiness.” —J. R. Miller. 14. The Ministry of Intercession “I pray fon them .. . which thou hast given, me” (John 17:9). As an encouragement to offer inter cessory prayer, remember that such prayer is the sweetest God ever hears, for the prayer of Christ is of this char-
