and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matt. 5:6). The food of the soul is righteousness and truth . . . Let us then eat! May we be as beggars before God who wait for their morsel of bread. Let us feel our weakness and our failings; let us read, let us pray with hunger in our souls. Only a great and continual de sire for instruction w ill make us worthy to discover the wonders in the law of God. Each receives this sacred Bread according to the measure of his desire.—Fenelon. 26. Hints on Prayer “ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father” (Matt. 6:6). -Do not have as your motive the de sire to be known as a praying man. Get an inner chamber in which to pray ¿where no one knows you are praying. Have no other motive than to know your Father in heaven . . . Prayer is getting into perfect communion with God. If the Son of God is formed in us by regeneration, He will press for ward in front of our common sense and change our attitude toward the things about which we pray . . . We have to ask God for things that are in keeping .with the God whom Jesus Christ revealed.—Oswald Chambers. 27. Trust—Triumph “ Your confidence , .. . hath great 'recompense of reward” (Heb. 10:35). As we survey our Christian experi ence, we can see that all our failures in the Christian life have been due to a defective belief. When Peter under took to walk on the w a t e r ; in re sponse to the invitation of his Master, all went well as long as his eyes were upon Jesus. It was only when he be came aware of the winds and the waves that unbelief made a continu ance of the miracle impossible. —The Life of Faith. 28. Onward, Christian Soldier “Thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ” (2 Cor. 2-14) . Press onward still! and Jesus will go with thee; His power thy fainting spirit will sus tain; And as the battle rages fierce about thee, W ill give the vict’ry o’er and o’er again. Press onward still, the fight will soon be ending: A “little while” to struggle here below, Then as the vaulted skies above are rending, Into the King’s glad presence shall we go!—Powell.

23. Bearing Christ's Image “Beholding . . . the Lord . . . changed into the same image” (2 Cor. 3:18). God can take real pleasure in us when we get to that place where our love for Him is in our faces as well as in our heart's. This can be done only by a supernatural work of grace that implants the divine image upon us. Paget Wilkes once said: “When the first Christian martyr [Stephen] went home, he saw Jesus standing, and I can imagine the Lord calling upon all the hosts of heaven to witness the' scene, saying, ‘There is the product of My atonement. Look at his face. That is what My salvation can do.’ Cap God take you in your workshop, arid in the ordinary walk o f life, and so let you go through fierce persecu tion and trial, that when you come through victorious, He can say, ‘That is the product of My atonement’ ?” —Spiritual Life. 24. Power Through Waiting ‘‘Fervent in spirit; s e rv in g the Lord” (Rom. 12:11). The greatest casualties of the Chris- tian life are along the line of least re-< sistance. The adversary is taking ad vantage of thé pressure of circum- stances without and the strain of life within to- find a point of vantage into our lives through which he may carry the position and overthrow all ca pacity for offensive warfare upon his kingdom by Spirit-filled witnesses. Does not all this constitute a call to purposeful waiting upon God whereby we may present a witness by life and by lip, which will come to others “not . . . In word only, but also in power,' and in the Holy Ghost” ?—Selected. 25. Hunger for Holy Food “Blessed are they which do hunger
