“Well, maybe God did intend that there should be such a set of men as preachers; and I was a bit hasty in calling them all lazybones. Then he added: “ But I didn’t really want to talk against preachers. What I wanted to say was this—that there is no such thing taught in the Bible as the present possession of eternal life—that is a fallacy.” I asked: “Would you kindly read John 3:36?” “ Yes,” he said, and distinctly read: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” “Well,” said he, “ that text does say ‘hath everlasting life’ but you can’t hope to prove a theory with one verse of Scripture.” “Would you read John 5:24?” I asked. “ I will, sir,” said he, and read: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlast ing life, and shall not come into con demnation; but is passed from death unto life.” “That verse says it too—‘hath ever lasting life’—but a couple of isolated texts don’t prove me wrong,” he re marked. “ Please read.John 6:47,” I said. He courteously turned the leaf of his Bible and read the verse. He stopped reading and said: “Yes, there it is again, ‘hath everlasting life,’ but—” At this juncture, a well dressed man in the crowd asked the young man: “What does H-A-T-H mean to you, if it doesn’t mean ‘present possession’ and how many times must the Lord say it to you before you believe it?” I could see he still was not con vinced, so I said: “Read John 20:31.” Turning to the verse, he read: “But these are written, that ye might be lieve that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his, name.” He was slow to say any more; it appeared as though he were thinking. Wishing to help him, I said: “What about reading 1 John 5:13?” He patiently turned to it and read: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son 'of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life . . .” He stopped, and swinging himself around in the direction where we were standing, said: “I f you know you have eternal life, that is the end of the ar gument!” Then looking me in the face, h e said: “The floor is yours, sir.” The incident is singular in this re spect—I never made a comment of any description—hut , simply asked

who solve the problems of the universe around the stove In the country store. Just as we approached, the young man addressing the crowd said: “God never intended there should be such a set of men as preachers. They are just a bunch of lazybones, and t h e sooner they don overalls and jumpers and apply' themselves to the useful arts and sciences, the better it is go ing to be for everybody concerned,” My brother, who is not a preacher, poked his elbow into my ribs and said: “Take that!” Realizing that this was a free-for- all discussion, and noticing a Bible in the speaker’s hand, I asked him whether he were willing to read a Scripture. "Certainly,” said he, then asked: “Which one?” I said: “Romans 10:14.” He respectfully read the verse which ends with the question: “And how shall they hear without a preach er?” He cleared his throat and said: AUTOGRAPHED COPIES CHIEF PATCH’S LATEST BOOK “THE HOUR STRUCK”
