RICS AWARDS
Heritage Winner: The School House, Methodist College
PROJECT TEAM:
T he School House, Methodist College is an excellent example of how thoughtful design and excellence of service has reimagined one of Belfast’s most iconic buildings to make it fit for 21st century educational requirements. The Grade B1 Listed Building, built in 1865 with a gross internal floor area of 4400m2, was refurbished with an 800m2 gross floor area two-storey new build extension constructed to the rear. As befitting a building of this age, care of the existing fixtures and fittings was paramount. For example, the Victorian era entrance leads into an ornate oak lined reception area featuring an original central staircase with a heavy timber balustrade. These features were protected and
preserved. Many other elements of the building such as the original paneling and staircases were also returned to their original glory. Extension, sustainable reuse, and recycling of the building fabric, together with conservation of original features, celebrates the well-loved ‘face’ of the school while respecting the historic integrity of the Queen’s Conservation Area. Methodist College and School House are now fit for purpose for the education of whole new generations of students. JUDGES COMMENT: This project is a successful revitalisation of an iconic but tired building into modern fit for purpose accommodation at the heart of the school.
