WE CHAT TO ROBERT EWING FCIOB, ABOUT HIS ROLE AS MANAGING DIRECTOR OF WOODVALE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY LIMITED AND HOW THE FIRM IS RESPONDING TO THE CURRENT CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY... “Woodvale’s success is down to the efforts of our talented team”

NIB: What are the main priorities and goals in your role as Managing Director? RE: As Managing Director my goal is to ensure that I manage the company in a professional way, which reflects our core values. That we continue to deliver the various complex projects to the highest quality, mindful that we must remain competitive in the current environment. Managing the pipeline and evaluating contracts to mitigate risk in these volatile times. My focus is ensuring the welfare of the Woodvale team across all sites, the priority remains that everyone returns home safely each evening. Our goals are to continue to grow and expand the company.

NIB: What are your biggest challenges as Managing Director of Woodvale Construction Company Limited? RE: Responding to the unprecedented! The last few years we have experienced many unprecedented events: collapse of the Executive; Brexit followed by the Covid-19 pandemic and most recently the material price raises and shortages. As Managing Director, I have to manage the risk to the business while ensuring we deliver on our contracts – without losing our shirts! While managing the day-to-day contracts I always have an eye to the future, ensuring to nurture up-and-coming talent to maintain a steady, reliable workforce. Woodvale’s success is down to the efforts of our talented team.

NIB: How do you keep your team/staff motivated? RE: Mutual trust and loyalty. As a family run business, we are very fortunate to have a long serving team. They all have the opportunity to pursue a lifetime career with Woodvale with mentoring and support as they progress from apprenticeship to senior management roles. We thrive on business successes and support each other through the high and low days. NIB: What are the challenges facing the industry going forward? RE: The construction industry is enduring a turbulent time following the uncertainty of Brexit, followed by the Covid-19
