RSUA Design Award: Winner: Altnagelvin Acute Hospital, North Wing Development
T he new North Wing of the Altnagelvin Acute Hospital in Derry creates a focal point for the hospital complex. It is an uplifting place for staff to work and it delivers an environment rich in healing potential. This addition provides healthcare accommodation for 144 people and has created a new Main Hospital Entrance for the site. It definitely ties together a disparate set of buildings, including a newly completed Cancer Centre and a 1960s tower block. The new wing has achieved its goal of being the unambiguous centre piece of this collection of buildings with its distinct civic quality JUDGES COMMENT: The architects, faced with a complex set of challenges, have made the solution seem simple through carefully considered design decisions… Accessible courtyards off the main thoroughfare bring a lot of natural light into the building and offer oases of calm and access to nature – an essential part of a healing environment.

Sustainability Award/ Living Place Award & Conservation Award: Winner: North West Multi Modal Transport Hub
T he North West Multi Modal Transport Hub has cultural, economic, environmental and social sustainability at its core. The project has brought life back to a forgotten piece of Derry’s built heritage and created a welcoming focal point for sustainable travel in the area. The original listed structure dates from 1873 and is one of the finest examples of railway architecture in Northern Ireland. Known as the Waterside Station, it suffered bomb damage in the 1970s and eventually fell into such disrepair that it was placed on the register of Buildings At Risk (BARNI). This project has returned this landmark building to its former glory. JUDGES COMMENT: The conservation of the listed structure has been undertaken with expertise and the architect has unobtrusively taken every opportunity to reduce carbon emission arising from the use of this building. The space is also designed with wider community use in mind and has already been used for performances.
