From Babies to Big Kids
Do you remember the first time you noticed God? God has always been with us, but we have only just begun to meet Him where He is. If God never leaves us, why does it feel like He is so far away? God is gentle. He reveals all of His goodness the first time we surrender our lives to Him. Our capacities are very small when we take that first step. Have you ever watched a parent take care of a baby? At first, the baby needs a lot of support. We understand that the baby cries to communicate their need for milk, a diaper change, or comfort. Parents may be very tired, but they will always get up in the middle of the night to care for the baby. A baby then grows strong enough to learn how to walk. When you want to get a baby to walk, you have to let their hand go and allow them to fall so they will gain a desire to walk. God does the same thing with us. He lets our hand go and it feels like He has left us, but He just opened our capacity up to walk. He knows that we will need that skill later. That skill grows to running, driving, biking, swimming, and traveling!
Scripture Activity:
Break down 1 scripture in the bible when God teaches something new. This should be a scripture when someone must try again, do something a different way, or have faith in God for something that has never been done. Be sure to work with a parent to define words you may not understand.
How do we know when God wants to grow us? Check these signs:
• Being in a new place
o Did you recently graduate from elementary, middle, or high school, and have any of your friends changed?
• Learning something new
o Do you have a new friend who doesn’t speak your language? o Did your parents ask you to help in the kitchen? o Did you start serving at your church? When it feels like God has not been answering you, check your surroundings. OLen, God will send a situation or opportunity for growth, but you may not have responded to it. In all that you do and everywhere you go, bring God into your space by asking for His direction. God will begin to show you the answers and you won’t miss it because you’ve positioned your heart to see the signs of His voice. New levels of grace, favor, and mercy become a part of you when you answer God’s call. We understand God in a new way.
This month, Minister Deja and Minister Chanelle taught about integrity. During the scripture project above, help your child identify words they may not understand. Find a movie or short video to watch together that helps to define that new word. Be sure to test them later to see if they remember the lesson.
