DID YOU HEAR THAT?

July 18 is World Listening Day and the celebration of Canadian composer Raymond Murray Schafer’s birthday. Schafer is known as the founder of acoustic ecology, or soundscape studies, which explores the relationship between humans and their environment via sound. The ability to hear and perceive sounds is amazing but also translates over to how humans interact with each other — a large part of this is through listening to others, to both their words and actions. Sometimes, great listening means paying attention to what’s going on underneath the surface. As discussed in the cover story, it can be difficult to know exactly what a child is trying to communicate, but the same proves to be true for adults — they either don’t communicate what is going on or have trouble doing so. As humans, we have a tendency to bottle up our feelings, and as a result, we display emotions, such as anger, even when what we really may be feeling is hurt, sadness, or suffering. As the old saying goes, “Nobody is perfect,” and as part of being a better listener, it’s important to remember that humans are all flawed and to provide grace. You never know what a person is going through, and it’s best to embrace and control the space between listening and our response — that’s where the actual listening takes place. In some situations, to become a better listener, we need to peel back layers to actually hear what someone is trying to say. And of course, the general rules all apply — don’t speak when someone else is speaking, play a passive role, and actively engage with follow-up questions and affirming body language. THE VALUE OF SITTING BACK AND JUST LISTENING
Ingredients
• 3 cups raspberries • 3 cups blackberries • 2 cups blueberries
• 2 cups strawberries, sliced • 1 1/3 cups sugar, divided
• 4 tsp orange zest • 1 cup orange juice • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 2 8-oz cartons mascarpone cheese • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 7-oz packages crisp ladyfinger cookies
Directions
1. In a large bowl, gently mix all berries with 1/3 cup sugar, orange zest, and orange juice. Cover and refrigerate for 45 minutes. 2. In a medium bowl, beat the cream until soft peaks form. 3. In another medium bowl, mix mascarpone cheese, vanilla, and 1 cup sugar. Gradually fold in whipped cream. 4. Over a shallow bowl, drain the berries. Dip the ladyfingers in the leftover juice and allow the excess to drip off. 5. In a 13x9-inch dish, place half the ladyfingers in a single layer. Add a layer with half of the berries and then half the mascarpone mixture. Repeat layers, starting with ladyfingers. 6. Cover and refrigerate overnight before serving.
Listening is a virtue! Sometimes, even if it’s only silence, there is still so much listening to be done!
