connectivity’ is the aspect of cabin design which is expected to see the most significant change in the next decade. Speaking on this, Jo Rowan, Associate Director - Strategy at PriestmanGoode, highlighted one of the challenges: “We are thinking about the needs of Generation Alpha as the hyperconnected digital generation, alongside our aging population who may not even have smartphones and will have anxieties around things such as data sharing. This means it’s a challenging time where the spectrum is very broad.” Meanwhile, Daniel Kerrison, Senior Vice President of Inflight Operations at flydubai, thinks that sustainability within aircraft will see the biggest change. “It’s a critical issue that will see really big change in the next ten years. There’s a shift coming in terms of the aircraft design process, the in-service life and post-service life, with sustainability being a key decision criteria.” The co-located events will continue tomorrow at Dubai World Trade Centre, with further insightful content sessions and showcases of industry collaboration. — For more information, please visit the websites, mromiddleeast.aviationweek.com or www.aime.aero

The Go Live! Theater welcomed a host of global experts for sessions on key industry themes. The ‘Capacity Issues on the Horizon?’ panel discussed fleet expansion plans, collaboration and what MROs, OEMs and other suppliers must do to ensure they have enough bandwidth to sustain the new fleet size in the region. During the session, Justin ODonnell, Director Technical Operations at Riyadh Air, said: The transient nature of seasonal passenger traffic influences airlines to behave in ways that create a surge in MROs, especially during the winter period, where we aim to utilise 100% of the available capacity, and I acknowledge the challenges this presents for MROs… Competition, particularly in the Middle East, is on the rise, as observed recently. The Middle East MROs are gaining global appeal, making it more challenging for Middle Eastern airlines to secure the same capacity. Our long-term strategy involves planning well in advance, looking at the full cycle ahead.” ‘The Future of Cabin Design – Anticipating and Adapting to Emerging Trends’ panel discussed the key focuses for the industry, including sustainability, connectivity of aircraft and passenger comfort. During the session, a live audience poll found that ‘integration of technology and

R UNNING until 6th March, the co-located events are welcoming leaders from across the global aviation supply chain at a time where the industry is on a strong upwards trajectory, particularly in the Middle East. According to Airbus’ latest Global Services Forecast, the region’s commercial aircraft services market will more than double in value by 2042, growing from $12 billion to $28 billion and registering a 4.4% average annual growth, surpassing the global average growth of 3.6%. Set to contribute to this growth, the show

has seen a 20% increase in footfall, and more than 240 exhibitors and 120 airlines have gathered to explore new avenues of collaboration, commercial opportunities and showcase industry-leading products and services. Key announcements and signings during the first day of MRO Middle East and AIME included Joramco announcing a new maintenance agreement with TUI, and HAECO announcing the induction of Emirates’ first Airbus A380 aircraft at its airframe facility in Xiamen, marking a new base maintenance contract between the two entities. »

HILLS

EMIRATES GOLF CLUB, MAJILIS COURSE

F IRST up was one of the newest additions to golf in Dubai where we played the beautiful Dubai Hills. Designed by European Golf Design and managed by Troon Golf it offers a challenge to golfers of all abilities. The course is carved out of the desert and has large contoured fairways that offer many strategic options. The greens are huge and undulating which can make things very tricky, especially if you get on the wrong side, we certainly had a few three putts along the way! Signature hole on the course has to be the par 5, 5th with the stunning Burj Kalifa dominating the backdrop offers the perfect line from the tee. In terms of degree of difficulty, I would put Dubai Hills as one of the less penal courses in the region. The wide fairways are also firm so for the average golfer they can receive a lot more run on their ball, making the approach shots that bit shorter. The undulating greens are probably the course’s biggest defence with the option to have some

T HIS has to be one of the most iconic golf courses on the planet. Host to the Dubai Desert Classic for 32 years it has firmly established itself as one the toughest courses on the DP World Tour. We attended the Desert Classic back in January and the course was in breathtaking condition with greens running at almost 13 on the stimp metre and rough literally up to your ankles! We returned in early March and we were not disappointed. The day we played the course was simply marvellous and the service was outstanding. Special mention has to be made for the staff in the Club’s, Jone’s the Grocer restaurant who recognised us from the week of the Desert Classic and even remembered our favourite smoothies! One of the many things I love about this place is that as you enter through the main doors of the Clubhouse, you are met with a winners’ wall, where each winner of the Desert Classic has their name on a plaque on the wall alongside one of their actual clubs used from that winning week. Former winners include Tiger Woods, Colin Montgomerie, Bryson DeChambeau and the man who inspired me to play golf, the late, great Seve Ballesteros. The driving range is massive and there is the option to hit from the manicured grass or from a mat. A large chipping green with a bunker also provides a good opportunity to warm up. Designed by Florida based architect, Karl Litten, the course has been sculpted through the dunes. The land the course sits on was donated by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his instructions were that the desert flora was maintained in its natural state.

seriously nasty pin positions.

As a result of this the course features hundreds of indigenous species of flora and fauna and also has 7 lakes to navigate. Almost every hole on the course has a challenging tee shot with fairways positioned at angles which make it extremely difficult to pick the correct line from the tee. Thankfully for us the rough had been cut back which were extremely thankful for as we were in it on several occasions. The greens were running true and fast and were actually quite receptive compared to the Desert Classic when they were rock hard. It’s hard to take your eyes off the stunning backdrop as you play, the Dubai skyline literally on the edge of the course make this a breathtaking experience. The signature hole is number 8 which has a very dramatic tee shot up the hill with skyscrapers aplenty to aim for. Again, yet another difficult tee shot as the longer the hitter you are, the more you can cut off the corner but for those who don’t quite make it, the desert and some well positioned bushes await. Hole 18 is probably one of the most dramatic finishing holes in the world with a dog leg left par 5 that offers a risk – reward situation with a second shot over water with the huge grandstands surrounding the green. Definitely a course you need to get on your bucket list, certainly not easy but well worth the experience where you can walk in the footsteps of some of the most iconic golfers to ever grace the game. — For more details and to book contact www.dubaigolf.com

The practice facilities at the course were excellent. They have 3 chipping / pitching greens, all with several bunkers surrounding them which gives you a great opportunity to hone your short game skills. The putting green is one of the largest I have ever seen which means there is always space to get some practice in even when the place is busy. The range itself was fairly spacious with the option for hitting from grass or mats. Overall, a lovely course to play, condition was perfect and the clubhouse had a great atmosphere with lots of golfers and non golfers enjoying the great food and drinks.

plays around 165 yards from the standard men’s tees and you are faced with nothing but water in front of you so a precision strike is needed in order to make the carry. A stunning par 3 with a wide green that slopes significantly from right to left where yet more water awaits. The 17th is yet another par 3 in which the hole measures around 180 yards, this time to a peninsula green surrounded by water and more deep

JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES, EARTH COURSE

W E have kept the best until last. The magnificent Earth Course at Jumeirah Estates is the host to the DP World Tour Championship, the final tournament when the best players fight it out to see who will win The Race to Dubai. The club is managed by my long term friend Stephen Hubner , who has had a very interesting career out in the Middle East where he worked his way up through the ranks at Dubai Creek Golf Club from teaching pro to Head Professional, culminating in achieving the Director of Golf position. When Dubai Golf (who own several of the top courses) took over at Jumeirah Golf Estates, there was only one man for the job and Stephen was appointed Director of Golf Operations in October 2018. The course itself is inspired by the great parklands of Europe and North America which is visually stunning with rolling fairways and several »

bunkers. This is an extremely intimidating tee shot, especially when you are coming to the end of your round, many a score card has been ruined here for sure! Hole 18 is one of my absolute favourites in the world. It can measure up to 600 yards depending on what tee box you are on but during the DP World Tour event they tend to move the tee up to put the water more in play for the tee shot as well as enticing those brave enough to go for the green in two. The fairways has a stream that winds its way up the centre of the fairway before it cuts across the front of the green. Needless to say my drive split the fairway and ended up wet! Making a par for most amateurs would be seen as an achievement. — For more details and to book contact www.dubaigolf.com

water features to navigate along the way. Designed by Greg Norman, it is an intimidating course from the tee box as on almost every hole you are faced with gigantic bunkers which stand out dramatically against the luscious green of the fairways. The greens are all large and undulating making it extremely difficult to get close to some of the pin positions. A shot which you might think is right at the flag may well end up 40 feet away if it takes one of the cunningly crafted slopes. The bunkering around the greens is really something to behold. Some of the traps literally have faces that are over 12 feet high so if your not so good in the sand then you better get practicing before coming here! The fairways are perhaps the smoothest I have ever played from, to the point that you can almost see every dimple on the golf ball as it’s almost teed up every time you are on the fairway. In terms of signature holes, the course has too many to mention but I shall name a few. Hole 6

The iconic red clubhouse stands as a symbol of hospitality and sophistication, housing premium facilities such as the locker rooms featuring an onsen spa, sauna, and steam room. The clubhouse design, with its distinct separation of the arrival area and main restaurant, creates an intimate boutique atmosphere that ensures our members enjoy a sense of exclusivity and serenity during their visits. Despite a bustling membership, our club maintains a quiet and refined ambiance. There might be 200 golfers at the club but you wouldn’t know it. This creates a very special feeling. T1: Can you highlight any notable events or tournaments that have taken place at the club over the years, and what impact they have had on the golfing community in Thailand? The club has a rich history of hosting a diverse range of professional tour events over the years. The tradition began in 1997 with the Asian Honda Classic, which marked Tiger Woods' inaugural victory in Asia. Subsequently, the club's reputation flourished, leading to the hosting of prestigious events such as the Johnnie Walker Super Tour, Volvo Masters Asia, Thailand Open, and most recently, the Aramco Team Series. These tournaments had a profound impact on the golfing community in Thailand, firstly by showing that that Thailand can host the best events in the region with some of the biggest names but also inspired a lot of people to pick up a golf club and learn the game. At the end of the day, we all have a responsibility to grow the game of golf, and inviting the worlds best players to participate creates a great opportunity to do just that. Even today, Thailand remains one of the leading countries in the region for hosting professional golf tournaments. Something we are proud to be a part of. »

T1: Can you describe the history and evolution of the Thai Country Club, and how it has become one of the premier golf destinations in Thailand? Thai Country Club's journey began nearly three decades ago with a vision to create an unparalleled golfing experience, that integrates world class golf facilities with five-star hospitality. The club has achieved many great accolades along the way, not only in the form of awards, but also by achieving a reputation for delivering one of, if not the best overall experiences in Thailand. Our unwavering dedication to excellence across all facets of the club, along with our strategic focus on the continuous training and development of our team members, stands as a testament to our commitment to setting the highest standards in the industry. These core priorities not only elevate the service we offer to our valued members and guests but also provide a platform for our employees to showcase their talents and enhance their confidence in providing exceptional hospitality experiences. THAILAND ONE/ GOLF T1: In your opinion, what would you say are the top three must-play holes at the Thai Country Club, and why? • 6th Hole stands out as a memorable par-3, bunkers front right and a steep run off area front left of the green makes the tee shot all about accuracy. • 12th Hole, a long dog-leg right par-4, from the blue or black tees you will have to carry water with your tee shot, then you’re faced with a long second shot into the green which is protected by bunkers on the right. • 17th Hole is a great par 5 -possibly reachable in two for the longer hitters but depends on the wind. The approach shot into the green is a challenging one as there is a steep run off into water on the right side and bunkers behind the green. A par or birdie on this hole will set you up for strong finish on 18. T1: How does the club work to maintain the high standards of the course, from the quality of the greens to the overall upkeep of the facilities? Ensuring the impeccable condition of our golf course has always been and will continue to be our utmost priority at Thai Country Club. While design and layout may be subjective and based on personal preferences, we believe that maintaining the highest standards of course maintenance is non-negotiable. The clubhouse and other facilities are equally vital, and their upkeep is managed with the same level of attention to detail and care. With our club in its third decade, we understand the importance of proactive maintenance to address wear and tear promptly. Our

rigorous systems, programs, and diligent oversight enable us to swiftly identify areas in need of improvement or upgrade. Additionally, the dedication and expertise of our staff play a crucial role in maintaining our high standards. Fostering a culture of continuous improvement and a commitment to excellence are values we instill in our team, which ultimately contributes to the exceptional standards we uphold at Thai Country Club. T1: What can golfers expect from the caddy service at the Thai Country Club, and how do the caddies enhance the overall experience of playing on the course? The caddies at Thai Country Club have earned a well-deserved reputation for their excellence over the years. As the primary point of contact for golfers during their rounds, caddies play a crucial role in creating a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere throughout the game. While focusing on providing a positive experience, our caddies also excel in their technical skills. Our training program is renowned for consistently producing top-tier caddies who are not only knowledgeable but also adept at catering to the needs of golfers. Through a mentorship system where experienced caddies guide newcomers, we ensure a continuous cycle of excellence. Our goal is for caddies to offer valuable insights, anticipate golfers' requirements, and deliver exceptional service that leaves players content, regardless of their performance on the course. While many golf courses share similar objectives, we have distinguished ourselves by refining our approach to exceed expectations in caddie services. »

“The award-winning club is regularly voted one of the top clubs in Asia and has hosted numerous international and domestic tournaments featuring the world’s best golfers.”

T1: What dining and hospitality offerings are at the club, and how do they complement the golf experience for members and guests? Food & Beverage is vital part of the club's success. Once again, setting the right environment and atmosphere and then of course providing high quality food that caters to our diverse mix of members. Our main restaurant offers Thai, Japanese and Western cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a view of the 18th green and 1st fairway it is a very relaxing place to eat before of after your round. We also have private dining rooms which offer a more private fee for small groups or business meetings. Before you get to the 1st tee, you will come across the first kiosk. It has a long bar with a broad selection of food and drinks and 40 seats which overlook the lake, providing the ideal place to grab a quick snack before golf or a cold beer after. Once on the course, we have a kiosk every three holes. When its 40 degrees during the hottest time of the year, the kiosks help break up the round by offering cold towels and drinks under shade, giving you a chance to re-charge before heading out again. The Food & Beverage offerings play a crucial role in the overall success of the club. Creating the perfect ambiance and ambiance is just the beginning; serving top-quality cuisine that caters to our diverse membership is key. Our main restaurant presents a delightful array of Thai, Japanese, and Western dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all against the picturesque backdrop of the 18th green and 1st fairway, providing a serene setting for pre or post- game dining. For more intimate gatherings or business meetings, our private dining rooms offer an exclusive setting. As you make your way to the 1st tee, you'll encounter our first kiosk, featuring a well-stocked bar, a wide selection of food and beverages, and enough seats for 40 people, with a scenic view of the lake—perfect for a quick snack or a refreshing drink before or after your round. During your game, you'll find a kiosk every three holes strategically placed to provide cold towels and drinks in the shade, especially valuable during

the sweltering heat of peak season. These kiosks offer a welcome opportunity to refresh and recharge, ensuring an enjoyable and comfortable round of golf at Thai Country Club T1: Looking to the future, what plans or initiatives does the Thai Country Club have in place to continue growing and improving the golfing experience for players? We take great pride in our commitment to excellence in every aspect of our operations. By continually refining our systems and infrastructure, we have achieved significant milestones over the years. Our pursuit of excellence is a journey without end, and we engage all our employees in this endeavor. Improving the golf course remains a top priority, with upgrades where necessary. Our Training & Development programs are evolving to incorporate cutting-edge technology and a more contemporary approach. Renovations are planned for parts of our facility to offer new experiences to our members and guests, similar to the successful transformation at kiosk one. Our ultimate goal is constant improvement, which takes various forms. As everything is interconnected, we are eagerly anticipating the future of Thai Country Club with great excitement. —

Included are dogs and cats cared for by poor people who form a lifeline for unwanted dogs and cats by feeding these animals but lack the funds to Two to three Wednesdays per month sterilization clinics are held in a fixed location in Hua Hin town and two to three Saturdays per month we conduct these clinics on-site at a temple or school somewhere in the Hua Hin District. Other than visible strays, there’s a huge problem with feral dogs and cats typically living in the bush and forests after having been dumped by people who no longer wish to take care of them. They scavenge during the night for food at the many garbage dumps supplemented by meager feedings by kind-hearted locals. Uncontrolled breeding means these populations increase over time, despite many puppies and kittens dying. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY/ MARGOT HOMBURG

As of the end of 2023, using approximate conversion rates, the costs for this sterilization work are almost US$550,000. We’re far from being done in this area alone which clearly demonstrates how pervasive stray dog and cat populations are – not only here, but throughout Thailand and neighboring countries too, as well as in so many other developing areas in the world. Moreover, the fact that underdeveloped areas become more affluent means more waste, allowing strays to have access to more food and will therefore carry larger litters. It’s an animal welfare problem of enormous magnitude that is hugely difficult to solve without intensive and specifically targeted efforts coupled with large capitalization. — If you wish to have more information on FIXemALL then please contact Margot directly at margot.homburg@gmail.com

Therefore, FIXemALL hires monthly a skilled, professional blow-darter from Bangkok. This part of our program is vital to get otherwise uncatchable dogs and cats to stop breeding. Truly exhausting work requiring enormous skill, perseverance, and innovative thinking, as well as an iron stomach and steeled nerves to deal with graphic encounters of misery and suffering deep in the bushes and overgrowth. »

O NE of the most popular attractions on the island are its beaches. Chaweng Beach is the most famous and longest beach on the island and is known for its stunning white sand and turquoise water. Along the beach, there is a variety of bars and restaurants to enjoy, along with a range of water sports including kayaking, windsurfing, and parasailing. Some of the local seafood is a must, with plenty of eateries serving only the freshest of produce. Another beach worth visiting is Lamai Beach, which is located on the southeastern side of the island. This beach is more laid back than Chaweng and offers a more relaxed vibe. Along the beach, there are a range of beach clubs, bars, and restaurants to enjoy, along with some beautiful natural attractions such as the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks. If you're looking for something a little more secluded, then head to the northern part of the island to Maenam Beach. This beach is perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful day on the beach. The beach is lined with palm trees, and the calm waters are perfect for swimming.

Aside from the beaches, Koh Samui has plenty of other activities to do. One of the most popular is visiting the Big Buddha temple, which is located on a small island connected to Koh Samui. The temple features a 12 metre tall golden Buddha statue and offers spectacular views of the island. The Na Muang Waterfall, which is located in the heart of the island is truly spectacular. The waterfall is one of the most beautiful attractions on Koh Samui and offers a great place to cool off on a hot day. Furthermore, venturing into the interior, visitors can explore the island’s jungle and walk in the shade of the lush forest. A favourite activity among locals and tourists is to take a boat trip and explore the many little islands nearby or the nearby Angthong Marine Park. Overall, Koh Samui is a beautiful tropical paradise with plenty to offer visitors. Whether you’re looking for a day soaking up the sun on the beach, exploring the local culture, or venturing into the jungle, Koh Samui has something for everyone. —
