Job Context

The Estates and Facilities Directorate (EAF) is responsible for planning, developing and operating Queen Mary University of London’s (QMUL) Estate. The Estate currently provides some 230,000m² of accommodation on three main campuses at Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square, with further property holdings at West Smithfield and Lincoln’s Inn Field. The Estate reflects the university’s operation as a research intensive, Russell Group institution with a wide range of teaching and research facilities, residences and recreational space. EAF is large and diverse Directorate covering numerous functions and support services including; Estates Operations (Hard and Soft FM), Environmental Sustainability, Security and Business Continuity, Commercial Services (Residences, Events, Retail, Hospitality & Nursery), Property & Space Management and Strategic & Capital developments.

Job Purpose

This post holder will operate across all QMUL campuses in all academic and residential properties. The post-holder will work with colleagues at the highest levels within QMUL and also liaise with internal and external specialists, trade unions and other employee representatives and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to develop estates policies and procedures that meet the requirements of the law and best practice. The Head of Health and Safety EAF will act as lead competent person to assist the Directorate in undertaking the measures necessary to comply with health and safety legislation and QMUL’s health and safety policies. The role holder will report to the Director of Estates, Facilities and Capital Development and will be a permanent member of the Directorates Senior Management Team (SMT). The role holder will work very closely with the QMUL Health and Safety Directorate in order to maintain effective communications, engagement and compliance assurance. The Health & Safety Manager will ensure all Directorate staff are appropriately trained and competent to carry out their Health & Safety duties. The Head of Health and Safety must display a high level of operational acumen to gain the confidence of staff and contracted suppliers. The EAF Directorate is moving towards Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS 45001) accreditation.
