A REASON TO CELEBRATE Why Independence Day Holds a Special Place in My Heart

a happy career. Our happiness in our relationships with our friends is mirrored at G3, which is a place where people heal and gather to grow their minds, bodies, and spirits through strong relationships. Mike and I thrive on fun and quality people, and so do our patients. Mike and I have instilled our desire for meaningful relationships in our kids, who also love the Fourth of July for its ability to bring people together for a good time. When we were younger, Mike and I would have barbecues on the beach, but we’ve switched it up the last few years by taking the kids to Legoland Hotel to see the impressive sculptures and watch the incredible fireworks display. The girls love our trip, and it’s refreshing to take time away from our hectic lives for quality time with the family. As we’ve gotten older, Mike and I have been able to recognize very distinct phases in our lives. When we were younger, we loved to hang out with our friends and have fun, but then our focus shifted solely to our careers and family, and now, we’ve learned how to balance work and play. We strive to emulate our personal lives in our professional careers, and I think we’ve done a commendable job. Just as there are different stages in life, there are different stages of healing. The road to recovery isn’t always linear. Some days will feel worse than others, and some days, you feel like you can fly. There are many ups and downs in the journey to recovery, but what matters is that you are always heading in the right direction. We hope that our G3 family enjoyed celebrating the Fourth with their loved ones and took some times to relax and unwind. Everyone came back feeling refreshed and ready to get our patients back on their feet. We also hope that you had a wonderful and safe Independence Day.

Last month, my family celebrated a wonderful Fourth of July as we always do, with our friends and family.

Independence Day has always been a special holiday in my life. My best friend growing up loved the holiday as much as I did, and we celebrated together as often as we could. I have so many great memories from Fourth of July celebrations in grade school, high school, college, and as a professional. In fact, the Fourth of July is the reason why Mike and I are married! One year, I was celebrating Independence Day with a college friend in Del Mar, and he set me up on my first date with Mike. If I hadn’t had such a strong love for the Fourth, I would have never met my husband! Every year, Mike and I try to spend Independence Day with our family and close friends. We believe that great friends and strong relationships are the foundation to a happy life and, subsequently,

WHY YOU SHOULD GET INTO STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING TODAY! The Best Water Sport You Haven’t Tried Yet

It’s the end of summer, and before fall and winter start to creep in, you can still take advantage of the warm weather and jump into the world’s fastest-growing water sport, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). This sport is exactly what is sounds like. You stand on a paddleboard — like a surfboard, but wider and more buoyant — and use a long paddle to glide across water. It sounds simple enough, but with a 200 percent boost in gear sales in the last year alone, SUP fans can tell you how much fun simple can be.

all be perfect places to paddleboard. Many outdoor gear providers across the world rent out SUP supplies now, so you can try it out with your friends before fully investing in the sport.

If you’re preparing to try SUP for the first time, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

• Hold the paddle with one hand on the shaft and the other hand on the top handle. Many beginners make the mistake of trying to hold the paddle with both hands on the shaft, but this will not allow you enough control. • Use your core, not your arms. Letting your arms do most of the work will tire you out fast. Instead, let your core and back muscles do the heavy lifting. • Despite the similarities, paddleboarding is not like surfing. Instead of a surfing stance, you want to keep your feet parallel and shoulder width apart, with your toes pointed toward the front of the board. Part of what makes SUP so fun is how the simple premise has been adopted into so many other activities. SUP enthusiasts created specially designed paddleboards for fishing, yoga, racing, and even touring the open ocean. So, what are you waiting for? Enjoy these last days of summer and have some fun out on the water!

Stand-up paddleboarding has ancient roots in African, Peruvian, and Hawaiian cultures. Thousands of years ago, each independently developed traditions of traveling across the water while using a paddle and a longboard. However, it was the Hawaiians who surfed the big waves with a paddleboard. Most stand-up paddleboarders aim to battle the waves to challenge their balance and core strength, but you don’t need to live by the ocean to enjoy paddleboarding. Wide lakes, lazy rivers, and even fierce rapids can

ARE YOU A PRO-LEVEL ATHLETE? The NFL Scouting Combine Tests

Do you ever wonder how your athleticism stacks up against the NFL players you watch on the field every Sunday? Well, it’s actually not too hard to find out. Every spring, the top prospects for the NFL draft participate in the scouting combine, where they perform tests in front of representatives from every team. You can easily replicate these tests and see how you compare to the pros. The 40-yard dash, which is exactly what it sounds like, is a test of raw speed. The 40 is the headline event of the combine, and a player’s draft stock can rise and fall based on a few tenths of a second. The shuttle drill tests lateral quickness and acceleration. Starting in a three- point stance (one hand on the ground), sprint five yards to the right, then 10 yards to the left, placing a hand on the ground at each stopping point. Finish with a five-yard sprint back to the starting line. At the combine, players test strength by bench-pressing 225 pounds as many times as they can. You can choose a weight that you feel comfortable with. Make sure you have a spotter on hand.

Where to Watch the Great American Eclipse VIEW OF A LIFETIME

THE HAPPIEST STATES IN THE U.S. On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called the Great American Eclipse.

rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot.

THE MUSEUM OF IDAHO, IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO

If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence.

The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of awesome events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists.

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA Need a place to watch the eclipse in the southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina, where the state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have a lot to do even when the eclipse is over. SANDHILLS, NORTH PLATTE, NEBRASKA In the heartlands, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. With wide-open skies, low
