tenure TRACK DESCRIPTION The Research Track is appropriate for faculty who focus the bulk of their professional effort on research augmented by program development, administrative service, clinical service and/or education activities. The purpose of research faculty appointments is to increase the quality and productivity of the research programs in the university by permitting the appointment of scholars to the faculty on a non-tenure basis. The primary responsibility of faculty members in this track is research. Individuals appointed to this track typically have a doctoral degree and post-doctoral experience, and their research may be dependent upon or associated with other ongoing research projects, or is service- related. Occasionally individuals with highly independent research programs are appointed to this track, but financial commitments from the university usually depend upon external grant support rather than departmental/college funds, as specified by initial or subsequent appointment and reappointment contracts. Faculty in this track shall be appointed or reappointed for a minimum term of one year, not to exceed seven years, with the exception of those individuals appointed for the term of a grant or contract. Tenure is not granted in this track; however, qualified individuals may be considered for transfer to the tenure track as described in Section I. CRITERIA FOR APPOINTMENT, REAPPOINTMENT OR PROMOTION Recommendations for initial appointment include favorable peer evaluations and documentation of past research accomplishments, present research projects, and indications of future potential in research. A role in the teaching programs of the college may be identified. INSTRUCTOR Individuals appointed as Instructor generally have recently completed post-doctoral positions and are beginning their professional career. Potential for excellence in research is of prime importance and is indicated by recommendations from mentors as well as publications and/or research programs which reflect the candidate's ability to plan and conduct original research projects.
