SHARED OWNERSHIP
CASE STUDY

New homeowners Anthony , 51, and his wife Iryna , 46, recently purchased a share of a new three bedroom semi-detached house at SO Resi Cambourne. They are full-time carers for their eight-year-old daughter who has a rare genetic disability, having left their roles as teachers to care for her. Purchasing on the private market was out of reach for the Universal Credit household consisting of the couple and their three children (14, 10 and eight), so they were delighted to be able to afford a 10% share of their house valued at £39,000 (full market value: £390,000). In the UK, approximately 2.6 million people have left their job to become a full-time carer for a loved one, which poses many challenges to people, including homeownership. The cost-of-living crisis is putting carers under unprecedented nancial pressure, as data reveals that two thirds of carers (63%) are worried about managing their monthly costs, so affordable housing schemes such as shared ownership are a lifeline for these priced-out rst time buyers. Anthony comments, “After almost a decade of being treated poorly by the rental system, it was a dream come true to be able to have a place to call our own at SO Resi Cambourne. We moved back to the UK from Vietnam in 2014, and when we returned it was like the property market had been turned on its head in terms of affordability.” The family had lots of issues with their rental property. Anthony says, “During the early years, when we were in rented accommodation, it was challenging as the space never felt like ours. Now we have a much better home with well-planned living spaces and this is mostly due to the option of purchasing with a 10% share. It has allowed a family of our size to buy a substantial space which we can call our own. Our daughter feels much more relaxed, and it is a positive environment for her. She has her own room which gives her independence, we have an open-plan lounge and kitchen for socialising, and we have a garden for her to play in. Our sons are also able to cycle to their schools. It is a cliche, but shared ownership has honestly changed our lives and we are set to be here for a very long time, and hope to buy more shares in our home.”
