A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

In the sixth form we are continuing to send off UCAS applications and receive offers from many Universities. Keep them coming! On Thursday, Year 13 students were lucky enough to hear from Marion Clarke, who is Head of Forensic Social Work at West London NHS Trust and Broadmoor Hospital. Marion has specialised in forensic mental health, public protection and risk management and has worked in low, medium and high secure care services. Marion was here to talk about social work and the intersection between mental health, criminal justice systems and the law. Students found this talk extremely interesting and very beneficial as it is relevant to the Crime and Deviance unit in sociology and the Forensic unit in psychology. Next Tuesday 28th January there will be a careers talk from Chris Wright about working Inside No.10 Downing Street. Chris has worked in central government for the last 10 years, including at the Department for Business and more recently advising the Prime Minister on how to improve education and skills programmes such as apprenticeships. If students are interested in learning more about the civil service beyond politics and economics, there is a google form to sign up on their Year 13 careers and progression classroom. A final reminder that the UCAS deadline is the 29th of January at 6pm. Students must make sure their application has been submitted to the school first, so their references and predicted grades can be added before sending it off. The link for booking year 13 PCM appointments which has already been shared with parents is now live and will be open until 9am on the 29th January. Have a good week!

MS PUGH, HEAD OF YEAR 13

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Hag-seed’ - Margaret Atwood

A marvellous retelling of the infamous Shakespearian play ‘The Tempest’. The story is weaved into the life of troubled, grieving Felix, theatre director, as he is exiled out of his town by his closest friends. He tries to avenge those who betrayed him and come to terms with the loss of his daughter as he directs ‘The Tempest’ with inmates as the actors as part of his new job. Atwood’s clear intelligence in Shakespeare’s work along with her unique, compelling writing style makes this book perfect for people who are interested yet perhaps intimidated by the complexity of Shakespeare.
