A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week we had the Bake Off competition and it was incredible to see all the fantastic bakes. The form teams really came together and the judges commented how the Year 9s had come up with some of the most creative and tasty flavour combinations of the competition so far - well done to everyone who took part! The winners were announced on Friday at lunchtime, and we will be celebrating their achievements next week in form time. Students were also assigned some time in the tutor calendar to look into their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award. The information should help them to set up their accounts and has been shared with tutors. If there are any issues about this please contact Ms Guy who is the co-ordinator for DofE at Waldegrave. Last week we had the Poetry By Heart semi finals. The competition was part of our English scheme of work before Christmas and students were asked to perform and interpret a poem from the collection. I was lucky enough to be asked to judge this, and I am pleased to say that all performers were incredible. We have an as- sembly coming up when the semi-finalists will be performing for the Year 8s, Ms Tongue and Mr. Goulbourne. I am excited to see how the performances have developed - good luck to them all! Well done to Emma T, 9SSA who passed her Royal Academy of Dance exam and achieved a Grade 5 high merit. A wonderful achievement! Next week we are going to be focusing on embedding positive behaviours. We want Year 9 to thrive and succeed, please can you speak to your child/ren about how to push themselves to work and behave to the best of their ability both in and out of class. We also have our Year 9 Options evening coming up on Tuesday 4th February. A letter has been sent to all par- ents and guardians but we ask that you please try to attend as this will be an opportunity to hear all about the process and how you can best support your child/ren with their choices. Have a good week!

MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.
