A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
I am pleased to report that students have been doing really well in lessons this week, continuing to be proactive and attending after school and lunchtime clubs. It is always fantastic to see Year 8 getting involved in the wider life of the school! In this week’s assembly led by Mr Greaves we were reflecting on the forthcoming Holocaust Memorial Day. Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on 27 January, and marks the liberation day of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945, the largest Nazi death camp. It was a very thought provoking assembly. At the end of the assembly students were asked to take a moment to reflect on how they can commit to do something themselves, whether that be to spread kindness or be more accepting of others and most importantly stand up against prejudice.
A big congratulations to the leading epraise forms this week STR, PUN, SHU. Year 8 has collected over 1300 epraise so far this month which is fantastic! Keep up the great work!
Well done to Mathilda G, 8EDA for achieving a ‘Distinction’ for her recent Grade 4 Ballet exam, what an amazing result!
Next week on Thursday 30th January - representatives from Year 8 will be taking part in The Waldegrave Bake Off 2025 - they will be making cupcakes that will be judged on the actual bake, texture, flavour, skill and presentation. As Head of Year, I am very much looking forward to being part of the judging panel! Looking forward there will be a focus on equipment. It is important that all students are fully equipped and preparing themselves for the school day. We are asking that parents and carers perform a stationery check as at this time of year those pencil cases that were bulging with equipment in September are now likely to be somewhat depleted. Please also remind students to remember their Chromebooks.
Thank you for your support at home and have a good week!
MRS LYDDON, HEAD OF YEAR 8
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘My name is Mina’ by David Almond
In the form of a journal, this book is a prequel for the book Skellig, and focuses on the character Mina before she has met Michael and Skellig. It focuses on her troubles with school and family and shines a light on her creativity. It is a fun, but serious book all at the same time and has many different forms of creativity like poetry and made-up stories. Overall, it’s a very personal and emotive tale, with lots of much needed honesty about school and the stories that are missed of kids who struggle in school. - Isabelle H, Y11
