A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Well done to the Year 12 students for being so proactive in seeking additional opportunities to broaden their skills and experience, such as work experience, shadowing schemes and summer schools. Students need to con- tinue to apply for all relevant opportunities, as taking part in them will most certainly boost their applications, whatever their plans are going to be post-18. Please can I remind students to keep regular checks on the Year 12 Careers and Progression Google Classroom so they don’t miss out on any further opportunities. This week Year 12 attended a workshop about mental health which offered advice on how to stay mentally healthy and specific strategies the students could use to support themselves, if the need arises. Additionally we hosted a talk on Thursday by Marion Clarke, Head of Forensic Social Work at West London NHS Trust and Broad- moor Hospital. Marion spoke to the students about social work and the intersection between mental health, criminal justice systems and the law. The talk was excellent and very well-attended. Today our A-Level Music students took part in a Choral Composition Masterclass, which will be extremely beneficial. I am delighted that to share that last week, Lizzie H passed her Grade 7 Singing with Distinction. A short clip of her singing “O Holy Night” at Off-the-Record’s Christmas concert was also featured recently on the local River- side Radio. This charity is hugely helpful in supporting Waldegrave students and Lizzie has sung a solo at their Christmas concert for the last 4 years as a way of giving something back for help she received. What a wonder- ful achievement, well done Lizzie! For the duration of next week, we are supporting a number of Taiwanese exchange students visiting the UK and attending Waldegrave. A number of Year 12 students have kindly agreed to support them during their time at the school and I’m really thankful for that. On Tuesday, we are delighted to welcome Chris Wright for a careers talk, “Working Inside No10 Downing Street”. Chris has worked in central government for 10 years, including at the Department for Business and more recent- ly advising the Prime Minister on how to improve education and skills programmes such as apprenticeships. This talk is mandatory for all Year 12 Politics and Economics students but students from all subjects are welcome to attend. It will take place in the study base after school. Finally, next Friday and as part of their A Level studies in Photography, the students will attend Taylor Wessing’s Photography Exhibition, which I am certain they will thoroughly enjoy.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Hag-seed’ - Margaret Atwood A marvellous retelling of the infamous Shakespearian play ‘The Tempest’. The story is weaved into the life of troubled, grieving Felix, theatre director, as he is exiled out of his town by his closest friends. He tries to avenge those who betrayed him and come to terms with the loss of his daughter as he directs ‘The Tempest’ with inmates as the actors as part of his new job. Atwood’s clear intelligence in Shakespeare’s work along with her unique, compelling writing style makes this book perfect for people who are interested yet perhaps intimidated by the complexity of Shakespeare.
