L ast month we considered the prob lem of understanding life. To solve this problem some have tried to equate life and blood by saying that life is in the blood. To support this position Levitipus 17:11 is quoted, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood . . .” , as well as other similar passages. But a careful reading of these verses will reveal that they are not saying life itself is in the blood in a peculiar way that it is not in other tissues of the body. All that these verses imply is that the life of the flesh is in the blood. It is impor tant that we make this distinction. If the former were the correct inter pretation, science could easily prove the Word of God to be wrong. But since God did not say life alone, but life of the flesh, we find instead close agreement between the Scriptures and the facts of nature as revealed by science. If these verses had read “ the life . . . is in the blood” , as some would like to make them read by leaving out the words of the flesh, how would the Christian explain life in cells that are kept alive outside of the body on artificial media with out blood being present? How would one explain life in simple animals that do not possess blood or even more how would life in plants be explained? No! God knew what He was saying when He inspired Moses to write these words. , What this phrase the life of the flesh is in the blood implies is that ■blood is essential for fhe life of the flesh. Not in the sense that blood con tains the life of the whole body but "All that I have taught of Art, every thing that I have written, whatever greatness there has been in any thought of mine, whatever I have done in my life, has simply been due to the fact that when I was a child, my mother daily read to me a part of the Bible, and daily made me learn a part of it by heart.

in the sense that it supports and nourishes the life that is already found in the cells of the flesh. This does not mean that there is no life in the blood, for there is. It consists of living cells just like other tissues of our body but the important point is that this life is the same as that which permeates all of our cells. The truth of this passage is seen when it is realized that if the blood is missing the flesh dies; not because blood imparts life to the flesh, but because it maintains it. Science has wonderfully confirmed this life-maintaining function of the blood. Today we know that essential materials for life like oxygen, food and water are carried by the blood as well as certain waste materials, such as carbon dioxide, that must be eliminated so that the body’s cells will not be poisoned. Then too, the blood carries the white blood cells and certain chemicals that prevent disease from destroying body tissues. So we see that the blood is the life of the flesh, not in the sense of im parting life itself, but in nourishing the life that is already present. The only blood that has power to give life directly is that which was shed oh Calvary where Christ shed His blood to cleanse us from our sins and now all who trust in Him can have eternal life. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only be gotten Son into the world, that we might live through him” (1 John 4:9). Though I have picked up the elements of a little further knowledge, and owe much to the teaching of other people, this property of chapters placed in my mind by my mother, I count very con fidently the most precious, and on the whole the one essential part of my edu cation."— Ruskin A C C O R D I O N S FAMOUS ITALIAN MAKES Available to Students, Teachers, Christian Workers and Missionaries at SPECIAL DISCOUNTS Write Today for FREE Literature Accordion Manufacturers &Wholesalers Outlet , Dept.
