lished in 1888 and are complete in themselves. These volumes will be found to complement the theological works of Hodge and Strong, and at many points they present clearer ex positions of Bible doctrine. The third volume, published in 1894, supple ments the first two by elaborating and extending discussion of difficult points previously presented. Each paragraph indicates by volume and page its connection with volumes one and two. Long ago the reviewer noted in the margins of volumes one and two the page references to the third volume additions, thus making the latter immediately available; such references published in the reprint edition would have enhanced its us ability considerably. Teachers, pastors, and students will not want to be without this important Calvinistic work; the possessor will soon learn to consult it frequently and with great profit and blessing. 3 volumes; 1877 pages; cloth; Zonder- van Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $14.85. The F irst Ep istle o f John By Robert S. Candlish Robert Smith Candlish (1806-1873) was minister for nearly forty years of St. George’s, Church of Scotland, Edinburgh, arid, after the disruption of 1843, of Free St. George’s, now St. George, West. The colleague of Thomas Chalmers, he became prin cipal of New College in 1862 while continuing his pastorate. ’ Among his many published works, The First Epistle of John Expounded in a Series of Lectures appeared in two volumes in 1871. Republished many times, Zondervan has now 're printed the Work in a single volume. Candlish had remarkable insight in the exposition of Scripture, and his powers of des crip tion were un equaled. On “He that abideth in him, ought himself also to walk even as he [Christ] walked,” he writes: “His life was a walk. The idea of earnestness, of definiteness of purpose, of decision, and of progress, is thus suggested. Many men live as if they were not really walking, but lounging and sauntering; or running fitfully and by starts, with intervals of aimless, listless sloth; or musing, or dreaming, or sleep-walking. Some are said to be fast-livers; their life being not a walk, but a brief tumultuous rush of excitement, ending soon in vacancy,
