as we please; we ¿ire not to change it or corrupt it (2 Cor. 2:17) but to preach it. The greatest sinners in the world are not the heathen without Christ hut those in the church who change the gospel into another message and who lead souls away from Christ rather than to Him as then- only Saviour and Lord. The Motive The real reason for preaching the gos pel is love (2 Cor. 5:14). When the be liever really loves the Saviour and when the Saviour’s love fills the believer’s heart that person will become an “ ambassador for Christ.” As such he will take, not his own message, but the message of his ruler, even of Christ Himself, and he will faith fully deliver that message to the world. Love for Christ is the great motivating power that creates such men as Paul and Carey and Livingstone and Taylor and hundreds of other faithful men and women who have devoted their lives to seeing to it that the orders of the Saviour were carried out. Love for Christ and this love alone can make others of us follow in the footsteps of these great warriors of the cross until we have taken the gos pel to every nation, tribe and tongue in the world. The Method Let us now consider for a moment or two the method we are to use in getting the job done. The first essential is prayer. The tend ency is to forget prayer or to minimize it and put it last on the list, but this is a tragic error. The Lord Jesus tells us that the mission enterprise must be bom in prayer (Matt. 9:38). The task of the local church- is to pray the Lord of the harvest that He will send forth laborers. Not everybody is called to become an active missionary in some far-off land; God calls those whom He wants in this important work, and the choice must be left with Him. The second essential is obedience. When God does call a young man or young woman, through the prayers of the saints (Matt. 9:38) the person called must re spond. The Holy Spirit will make very plain His call to service (cf. Acts 13:1-4). Both church and missionary should co operate in obedience to the call - of God. The third essential is giving. The work of missions is the financial responsibility of each local church. (Study in this con nection the following Scriptures: Acts 13:1-4; Rom. 15:24; 1 Cor. 9:7-14; Phil. 4:14-17.) Out of every local church there ought to be going a steady stream of young people, prayed out and called by the Holy Spirit, entering into the work of the gospel. These young lives are the responsibility of the local church. This church should stand behind these young people financially, and should see that every need is met and that each mission ary is provided for as he does the work to which God has called him.
