YOUNG PEOPLE continued way. Let the church accept the challenge of television today and use it for the glory of God. The invention of television will open the door to new opportunities of Christian service to many young people. Today radio technicians, radio scriptwriters, radio announcers and radio preachers are mak ing possible the extension of the gospel on a scale never before dreamed of. Young people can serve the Lord in technical skills as well as in actual preaching and teaching. Television is opening the door for other lines of service for Christian young people who will be training to this end. Television has succeeded in reuniting the members of the American family. This is a real contribution. Now, instead of chasing all over the country, members of the family stay at home and watch televi sion. Although the pictures they see are not always the best, yet the entire family now spend many evenings at home to gether and thus are brought into a closer fellowship. Again, television has tremendous pos sibilities in the field of education. Bible classes and courses of Bible study can be given over television. People may be taken right into the classroom via tele vision. The Liabilities of Television As there are great possibilities in televi sion there are also great dangers. There is the danger of mass degradation. Unless the television programs are carefully watched this means of communication could result in producing a nation of drunkards and a nation of nicotine fiends. Television comes with almost irresistible appeal in its advertising of these products (2 Cor. 6:14-18; Gal. 5:16-26). Television can be a great time waster. People sit by the hour and watch tele- sion. Men and women who used to go to bed at a reasonable time each night, now sit up until after midnight watching tele vision. It is possible that people who for merly spent their time reading and study ing now spend it being entertained. Tele vision could produce a generation of people who can no longer concentrate or meditate or do their own reasoning—all they will be able to do is laugh at point less jokes (Rom. 13:11-14; Eph. 5:11-17). Television may curtail the work of the church. How many Christians are there (at least church members) who used to attend church on Sunday evenings and Wednesday evenings, but who now would rather sit at home in their cozy chair and watch some television show? Some of God’s people are so tired out when eve ning comes that they just can’t get out nights any more. But they can sit up until midnight watching television! (Matt. 6:19-33; 1 Cor. 15:58; Gal. 6:9; Heb. 10:25). Television may weaken the spiritual lives of God’s people. The Christian must use television, and not let television misuse him. He must learn how to put first things first, and how never to allow television to interfere with his duties toward God. END.

It was his search for the answer to the question, “What is Christianity?” that led John Wesley to re-examine the current religious thought of his day. It was his discovery of the answer as a way of life, a pattern for living, that produced the Wesleyan revival and revolutionized English history and culture.
