Sometimes, birds and cats can get along after all.
The proof is the creation of the Tri-City Griffons, the result of an off-season move
aimed at ensuring the survival of B level hockey in the district. Slumping numbers have
prompted the Hawkesbury, Vankleek Hill and St-Isidore minor hockey associations
to merge their B level programs. The teams’ new logo, portraying a cat with wings and
a bird’s head, reflects the merger of the Hawkesbury Hawks, the Vankleek Hill Cougars
and the St-Isidore Eagles. Fusions are also taking place in Casselman, Embrun,
Rockland and Clarence. Because of declining registrations, the organizations have
difficulty forming teams. The merger will bring together about 130 players in atom to
midget divisions. The new format ought to ensure the longevity of B level hockey, and
provide players with more opportunity to play. Replacing the Paul-Guy Lalonde
League, the new 16-team circuit will play 30 games, compared to 24 now. Tryouts are
set for September while the Griffons start their new season October 9. The priority for
organizers now is money. That is why they are seeking sponsors. A $2,500 contribution
secures the donor’s name will be displayed on players’ sweaters. Call treasurer Kelly
Lefebvre (613-677-0122) or president Pierre Desjardins (613-679-1307) for more
information.
