SCL 567 Exegeting the City (3) An introductory study of the city as the center of religion, economics, politics and social life for all major cultures. Focuses on forming a professional response for ministry in the city. SCL 568 The Logos of World Civilization (3) Explores the unfolding meaning of global civilization from historical , bib­ lical, cultural and strategic perspec­ tives taking into account spiritual dynamics and world view issues. SCL 573 Urban Social Change (3) Explores the literature and contempo­ rary case studies of urban social changes and urban change agents. Attention is given to the analysis of social transformation through the cre­ at ion of commiued communities including urban churches.

May be repeated under a different topi c. Social Science Research Methods SCL 500 Library Research Skills (1) Use of reference and bibliographi c sources for in-depth research at the graduate level. Required of all enter­ ing graduate students.

SCL 803 Qualitative Research (3) An advanced course on the etlmographic method, emphasiz ing rigorous research design and quali ty contro l with specific reference to educational research. SCL 879 Research Design (3) Deve lopment and refi nement of the doc tora l di sse rtation proposal th rough prepara ti on , presen tat ion and critique of proposal drafts and examination and discussion of issues related to dissertation research. Dissertation (1 ·8) Normally a student must take a mini­ mum of two units for up to a maximum of 4 semesters to be considered full-time. SCL 882 D.Miss. Continuous Enrollment (0) Normally a student must take a mini­ mumof 3 units per semester to be con­ sidered full time . A student is consid­ ered full-time for four semesters while taking this dissertation class. Fee:$100. SCL 890 Ph .D. Dissertation Field Research (1-12) Normally a student must take a mini­ mum of 3 units per semester to be considered full time. Astudent is con­ sidered full time for four semesters while taking this dissertation class. SCL 892 Ph .D. Continuous Research (0) Students who need extra time to work on first or final draft of the dissertation are required to register for this course to maintain degree status. Astudent is considered less than half-time status while taking this class. Fee: $100. SCL 893 Leave of Absence (0) For students who have been granted an official leave of absence from the program. SCL 577 Counseling and Development in a Multicultural Context (3) Designed to equip students working in urban ministri es with prob lem so lving skills as they engage in the basic lay/ pas­ tora l counseling of multi-ethnic and crosscultural reside nts of the city. Stu­ dents will become familiar with both the practice and theory of various schools of thought in counseling wi th a special emphasis on crosscultural elements. SCL 578 Worldview Foundations for Ministry (3) Designed to train the student to ana­ lyze and articulate his/ her own pre­ suppositions, norms, and values from a Judeo-Christian framework in order to provide an evaluati ve base of other worldview systems and proposals. SCL 581 Nature of the Non-Western World (3) Explores the ancient rituals, traditions, and modern ideas by which two-thirds of the world's people now live. The stu­ dent will become familiar with and eq uipped for interaction with th e assumptions, belief systems, and cultural ways that have yielded profoundly differ­ ent societies in the non-western world. SCL 582 Urban Leadership Development (3) Examines various models, definitions, and case studi es of urban leade rship styles. The different roles and charac­ ter formation of the leader are pre­ sented. Special focus is given to the theory and methods of mentoring as esse nti al for the multiplication of strategically-minded leaders in the city. SCL 583 Poverty and the City (3) Examines contemporary concerns of inhabitants in the city for justice, employ­ ment, housing and educat ion . Special emphasis is given lo developing strategies to empower residents of the city. Practicum SCL 690 Practicum (1-6) May be done in Church Planting Urban Studies, Women's Ministries or ot her approved church / mission pro­ grams. Designed for M.A students. SCL 760 Urban Practicum Internship (3,6) Aprogram of crosscultural internships in the urban metropolitan area of LA Bypermission of faculty only. SCL 791-792 Field Internship (2,2) Integ ration of all the disciplines of ministry and seminary education. It provides supervised experience in vari­ ous phases of Christian ministry. One hundred hours of field experience each semester are evaluated in class­ room interaction. Required of M.Div. (missions) students. Prerequisites: PT 602; Completion of 64 hours of the M.Div. program for PT 791, PT 792.
