REGISTRATION AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

RE-ADMISSION A student who has attended Biola Universit y and has dropped out for one semester or longer will be required lO fil e an application for re-adm ission ($ 1:i fee ). A pastor's ref­ erence will be required if the st udent 's lea\'e of absence exceeds two years. Students who enroll after an absence of more than a year are required lO follow the current catalog

Admission to Biola Uni vers ity is on a select ive basis and only those who are most likely to profit from Biola Univer­ sity's educational program and its distincti1·el y Christian emphasis are admitted. Because it is the purpose of Biola University to train Christian young peopl e, th e applicant shou ld have been a Christian for at least one yea r. Biola University has a strongly evangelical Christian commit• ment and requires that to be accepted, the applicant must be an evangelical believer. However, Biola does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the admission of students, employment, and the educational programs or activities it conducts. The University also prohibits sexual harassment. Inquiries regarding this nondi sc1imination policy and the policy prohibiting sexual harassment may be directed to the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs in the Stu• dent Services Building for further infom1ation and procedures. Students.who are interested in attending Biola University should request application forms from the Office of Admis­ sion. Because enrollment is limited and admission is on a selective basis, applications should be made as early as possi­ ble. Decisions are made only on completed applications. Visits to the campus are encouraged. It is advisable to write or phone in advance to arrange an appointment. Each semester, Biola hosts visitation days (University Day, Spring Preview Day and others) that help acquaint prospective stu· den ts with the programs on campus. The dates for these clays are li sted on the academic calendar. Admission to the Univenity does not guarantee admission to the business administration, education, music, nursing and psych ology programs, nor to on-campus housing. Application fonns for these

requirements upon readmi ss ion. ADMISSION OF NON-NATIVE ENGLISH-SPEAKING STUDENTS English Proficiency

It is essentia l that non native English speaking students be able to understand lectures in English and also be able lO express their thoughts clearly in both written and spoken English. Biola University has determined this level of Eng­ li sh proficiency to be demonstrated by a score of 600 paper/ 250 computer on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) . Admission into academic programs at Biola University is based upon the understanding that stu­ dents either already have an equivalent to 600 paper/ 250 computer or higher on the TOEFL or are actively making progress in obtaining this level of English proficiency. Applicants who have not reached an English proficiency equivalent to a sco re of 600 paper/ 250 computer on the TOEFL, may enter Biola University's academic programs in one of two ways: 1. Biola English Language Studies Program (ELSP) Non nat ive English speakers without a TOEFL score or TOEFL scores below 600 paper/ 250 computer mayenter most Biola degree programs if they have met all the other require­ ments for admission.* Ever,• non native English speaking stu­ dent with a TOEFL score below 600 paper/ 250 computer or without a TOEFL score is required to take the Biola English Placement Exam (BEPE) during orientation week of their first semester at Bio la. Studen ts are assigned English courses in Biola's English Language Studies Program based on their test results. Courses assigned may range from one semester part­ time to three semesters full-time of English language courses. *See TOEFL/BEPE requirements for specific programs. Contact the English Language Studies Program concern­ ing financial aid available for students enrolled full-time (100-102) in ELSP. 2. Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and score the minimum requirement for the intended academic program Non-native, English-speaking students may be admitted in an academic program with the minimum TOEFL require­ ment for their program while taking required English courses. The minimum TOEFL score requirement for undergraduate programs is 500 paper/173 computer and most graduate programs is 550 paper/213 computer. (See TOEFL/ELSP requirements for specific programs.) Students who wish to take TOEFL should obtain the TOEFL Bulletin of Information. Copies of this bulletin and the registration form may be obtained in a number of cities outside the United States. They often are available at Ameri­ can embassies and consulates, offices of the United States Information Service (USIS) , United States educational com­ missions and foundations abroad, and binational centers.

ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT Applicants Applicants who have been granted acceptance are required to remit an enrollment deposit. The deposit is non­ refundable after May I if the student does not enroll in the term for which he/she applied. Deposits will not be held over if there is a lapse in enrollment. Accepted applicants, whether or not they are preregistered, must inform Biola of any change in their plans regarding enrollment. Enrolled Students When enrolled students officially withdraw, their enroll­ ment deposit will be applied to any balance owed at the time of departure, or will be refunded if their account is paid in full. As a student continues his / her enrollment at Biola, the enrollment deposit is retained as a continuing preregistra­ tion deposit to assure the enrolled student of a place in the student body. Students who discontinue their enrollment at Biola and fail to officially withdraw at the Registrar's Office (by December 31 for the spring semester, or by July 31 for the fall semester) will forfeit the enrollment deposit.
