SPY 691 ~96 Practkum I-VI (3) Supervised clinical experiences including diagnostic and therapeutic activities with inpatient and outpatient clientele. Hospitals, private and pub li c clinics, mental health organiza tions, schools and college counseling centers are utilized. Prerequisite: suc cessful completion of SPY 680, or approval of the Professional Training Committee. Co-registration in SPY 688 required . Required of all doc- toral programs; Ph.D. and Psy.D. SPY 697-699 Practicum Elective (1-3) For students desiring supervised clinical experiences beyond the requirements for their degree. These are used as elective practica. Prerequisite: approval of the director of clinical training. Co registration in SPY688 required. SPY 700 Clinical Case Conference I 1) Small group supervision of ongoing psychological cases. Elective. SPY 701 College Teaching of Psychology (2) A seminar on teaching methods including the development of course objectives, outlines, lectures and eval uations. Major emphasis is placed on the examination of the various teach ing methods available to the teacher of psychology. Elective. SPY 702 Social Psychology: Interpersonal Processes (3) Focuses on the social psychology of interpersonal relationships with special emphasis on intimate rel a tions. Prerequisite: a survey course (undergraduate or graduate) in social psychology and permission of the instructor. Either this course, SPY 608 or SPY 625 required of Psy.D., Ph .D. SPY 703 Organization and Admiristration of Psychologi<al Services (2) Aseminar dealing with administrative issues such as personnel, finances, commu nity relations and supervision. Elective. SPY 704 Advanced Research Design (3) A continuation of SPY 601 for students interested in pursuing dissertation research. The course includes advanced study of univariate and multivariate analysis of variance, regression analysis, canonical and discriminant analysis and factor analysis. Required, Ph.D. only. Prerequisite: SPY601. SPY 705 Oinical Psychopharmacology (3) A general overview of current research on th e use and effectiveness of psy chotropic medication in the treatment of the psychoses, neuroses and otl1er emo tional disorders. SPY 644 Measurement and Assessment IV: Advan<ed Projedives (Spedal Issues) (2) Advanced interpretation of the Rorschach including special issues as forensic evaluations, child and adoles cent personality assessment, assess ment of thought disorder . Other basic projective instruments such as the TAT, CAT and Sentence Comple tion tests are also covered. Prerequi site: SPY643. Elective. SPY 645 Measurement and Assessment V: Neuropsydiological (3) This course provides an overview of the basic issues in neuropsychology, and examines the key cognitive-psychologi cal ability areas that are assessed in a neuropsychological evaluation. Assess ment from a flexibl e, hypothesis-testing and clinical perspective is emphasized. Special attention will be given to brief neuropsychological screening proce dures which help to differentiate between organic and psychological dis orders. Prerequisite SPY 607, 670 or 705. Elective. Required of Psy.D. with Family.Child emphasis. SPY 647 Advcmced Assessment of the Q,ad (3) An advanced diagnostic course which focuses on the assessment and diagno sis of exceptional children as well as legal and advocacy issues required by th e Individuals with Disabilities Act. Specific diagnostic populations include mentally retarded, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and gifted children. Attention is also given to low incidence handicaps such as vision impaired, hearing impaired, multiple handicapped, etc. Prerequi sites: SPY 641, 680 and completion of/or current enrollment in a child practicum. Required of Psy.D. with Family.Child emphasis. SPY 650 FamUy Psychology and Psychopathology (3) Emphasizes the construction of a con ceptual framework for system change as a foundation for clinical interven tion. Surveys major approaches to sys tems-oriented family therapy and includes such related issues as the family life cycle, object relations inte gration, famil y pathology/ dysfunc tion, family assessment , ethnicity and religious influences. Elective. SPY 663 Hume11 Sexuo&ty (3) An examination of the areas of human sexual functioning , behavior, relation ships and feelings . Issues of sexuality are di scussed within spiritual, psycho logical, cultural and medical/ health
perspectives with implications for clini cal treatment of sexual issues. Elective. SPY 670 Neuropsychology (3) Consideration of behavioral and intel lectual disorders of neurological origin. Clinical and experimental evidence is considered as they relate to the major syndromes. Prerequisite: Physiological Psychology. Either this course or SPY 607 or 705 is required of Psy.D., Ph .D. SPY 680 Prepradicvm (3) Acondensed version of Prepracticum I & II for students with significant previ ous graduate studyin psychology. This course is designed to facilitate the development of empathic listening, interpersonal skills and basic therapeu ti c techniques through group interac tion and closely supervised on-campus practicum experiences. Required of adva nced first year students to be taken concurrently with SIP 500 Psy chotherapyand Religion. Fall . SPY 681 Prepracticvm I (1) The first of a two-course sequence designed to facilitate the development of empathic listening, interpersonal skills and basic therapeutic techniques in clud ing an introduction to ethics. This first course emphas izes a small, interactive group format for the devel opment of skills. Interterm. SPY 682 Prepracticvm II (2) The second of a two-course sequence designed to facilitate the development of empathic listening, interpersonal skills and basic therapeutic techniques. During this course, direct observation and videotaping of the student 's first clinical practicum in the University's on campus counseling center are utilized to provide a closely supervised introduction to the therapeuti c process. Spring . Requirement: To be taken concurrently with SIP 500. Prerequisite:SPY681. SPY 688 Practicum Supervision (0) Small group supervision coordinated by director of clinical training. This course is taken concurrently with all practica (SPY689, 691-699). Required of PhD. , Psy.D. SPY 689 Practicum Contituous Enrolment (0) Students continuing a fall or spring practicum through Interterm or sum mer will register for this 0-unit course. Registration in a fall or spring practicum and SPY 688 is required. Prerequisite: SPY 691 and permission of the director of clinical training.
SPY 632 Research Problems in Psychotherapy (2)
Consideration of research approaches to studying the process and outcomes . of psychotherapy. Special emphasis is placed on measurement of process and outcomes, design and execution of research and status of psychotherapy research to date. Students are actively involved in reviewing and evaluating psychotherapy research in selected areas. Prerequisite: SPY601. Elective. SPY 633 Advanced Seminar in Psychopathology (3) A survey of the development, dynam ics and classification of the psychologi cal disorders from a psychoanalytic point of view. Special attentions given to the neuroses and the operations of ego defense mechanisms. Elective. SPY 641 Measurement and Assessment I: Intellect (3) The first in a sequence of courses directed toward competence in admin istration, scoring and interpretation of psychological tests. The course involves a survey of basic concepts and principles of psychological measure ment , including factors influencing validity and reliability. Emphasis is placed on the Child and Adult Intelli gence scales as well as measures of achievement, adjustment, and adaptive behavior. Graduate student will administer test batteries to public school and clinic populations and also engage in diagnostic and report writ ing activities. Graduate students will also learn diagnostic criteria for handi capped children as well as their legal rights as set forth by Public Law 94-142. Cost of materials required is approxi mately $150. Required of Psy.D. , Ph .D. SPY 642 MeasUJe111ent and Assessment II: Personality (3) Use of objective personality instru ments with emphasis upon the MMPI- 11 and MCMI-11. Introduction to more structured projective instmments such as the TAT and Sentence Completion. Prerequisite: SPY 641. Cost of materi als required for this course is approxi mately $150. Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 643 Measurement and Assessment Ill: Projectives (Rorschach) (3) An introduction to the use of projec tive techniques in personality assess ment with special emphasis on the administration, scoring and interpre tation of the Rorschach using Exner's comprehensive System. Prerequisite: SPY642. Required of Psy.D.
