Doctor of Education The Doctor of Education degree is offered in cooperation 111th the Depart­ ment of Christian Education at Talbot School of Theology. The Ed.D. 111th a crosscultural emphasis is specifically for training professionals working in cross­ cultural educational programs that may or may not be localized in churches. The program is designed to train highly competent professionals to conduct research and teach adult literacy, TESOL, Theological Education by Extension (TEE}, Bible school and semina11• pro­ grams and other formal or non-formal educational programs that are part of crosscultural ministry. The program places a strong emphasis on crosscultural educational research. The faculties of the School of lntercultural Studies and Talbot School of Theology support the preparation of the student and the direc­ tion of dissertation research. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS All students must meet the following requirements: I. All applicants must possess a bac­ calaureate degree from an accredited college or university 111th a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average. Graduates from approved unaccredited colleges, if accepted, will be granted provisional acceptance , if GPA is 3.4 or higher. Graduates from approved unaccredited colleges may be required to take certain additional liberal arts course work (not applicable toward the graduate degree) , if their undergraduate program did not include these courses. 2. Those without intercultural / mis­ sions or Bible/ theology may ha\'e addi­ tional coursework added to their program. 3. All applicants must submit a 11Tit­ ten statement outlining their rncational objectires and how the degree 11ill relate to those objectives. Applicants should attach a one-page, t)pe11Titten letter to the application. 4. All applicants are required to sub­ mit three letters of references on forms supplied bythe school.

The burden for the billions of non-Christians (more than three billion today; fi\'e billion projected by the year 2,000) has been great. There has been an academic program at Biola stressing mission interests for decades , and this was brought to a high le\'el of refinement under the leadership of Dr. Clyde Cook. Biola combines spiritual ministry with a high academic conceptualization that is realized through a strong facul ty, a growing library facility, and an empha­ sis on sound research to underlie the teaching program. Students can enrich their training in Bible, theology, interna­ tional business and psychology at the School of lntercultural Studies by taking coursework at Talbot School of Theol­ ogy, the School of Business and Rose­ mead School of Psychology. They can also complete a specialization in inter­ cultural studies and missions within the Talbot degree programs and a special­ ization in intercultural studies within the Rosemead degree program.

In addition to its undergrad uate offerings, the Department of lntercultural Studies offers graduate programs leading to a ma ster's degree and two doctoral degrees. These programs emphasize the social sciences and their relation to intercultural under-standing, world mis­ sion, education and a number of techni­ cal specialties related to these topics. The Department of lntercultural Studi es was established: (I) to prepare missionary recruits from every nation with crosscultural communication skills for international senice; (2) to prmide missions the opportunity to encourage the personal and academic de\'elopment of their overseas staff; and (3) to pre­ pare ministers and Christian education professionals for the types of crosscul­ tural (and cross-subcultural) ministries they 11ill face in today's multi-ethnic and multi-national world, especially as these impact the local church. The Department of TESOL (Teach­ ing English to Speakers of Other Lan­ guages) and Applied Linguistics offers two master 's degree programs. The graduate program in TESOL provides professional preparation for English lan­ guage teaching among speakers of other languages. The graduate program in Applied Linguistics deals with issues inrnlved in second language learning, analysis, teaching and research.

An accredited master's degree or its equivalent appropriate to the Ed.D. is required for admission. Students must ha\'e a GPA of 3.3 in their previous gradu­ ate study. They may transfer in a maxi­ mum of 30 units of master's le\'el work toward the Doctor of Education. Three yearsof crosscultural minisl(1' experience, or its equivalent, is required for entrance to the program. In addition, proficiency in a second language is expected of stu­ dents working in crosscultural settings. Admission of International Students See Admission, Registration and Requirements section. GENERAL ACADEMIC INFORMATION M.A. in lntercultural Studies The M.A. in lntercultural Studies is a 42-unit program. For tl1e qualified appli­ cant with extensi\'e undergraduate work in intercultural studies/ missions, it may be reduced to a minimum of 32 units. Students 111th little or no academic prepa­ ration for graduate studies in biblical and theological areas may be required, at the discretion of the academic ad,isor and in consultation with the student, to take additional units, such as BE 517,519,520, or TH 511,512,613,614. It is a 42-unit program. In cooperation with the School of Business Biola offers an M.A. in lntercul­ tural Studies with an emphasis in Inter­ national Business. This program is designed for students anticipating ser­ ,ice in an international business setting with an emphasis on international busi­ ness skills and socio-cultural training that will enable the business person to live and work comfortably in a crosscul­ tural context.
