STATEMENT OF SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS

Graduate students carrying six semester hours or more who receive a 2.0 current GPA or less will be consid­ ered for academic disqualification. APPEALS Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Registrar's Office and must include explanation of why minimum acade­ mic requirements were not met and why an exception is war­ ranted. Appeals must be received within three weeks of noti­ fica tion that the studen t is on academic probation or has fai led to meet academic probationary requirements. Appeals which cannot be resolved 1vith the Regisu-ar 's Office will be referred to the Academic Standards Committee or the appropriate graduate facu lty committee. FINANCIAL AID Failure to compl ete the required units or maintain a GPA as outlined in the Statement of Satisfactory Academic Progress will result in financial aid probationary status. FINANCIAL AID APPEALS Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Financial Aid Office and must include explanation of why minimum aid requirements were not met and why an exception is war­ ranted. Appeals must be received within three weeks of noti­ fication that the student is on financial aid probation or has fa iled to meet financial aid probationary requirements. ATHLETICS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Students not making satisfactory progress will be consid­ ered ineligible for athl etic competition and extracurricular activities. The student on academi c probation may be allowed to compete or participate upon revi ew by the Acade­ mic Standards Committee. Extracurricular ac tivities include: student government, forensic teams, gospel teams, band, chorale, intercollegiate athletics and other faculty sponsored organizations. For appeal procedures, see the appeal proce­ dure outlined under appeals section above. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY As a Christian institution , Biola Un ive rsity is especially concerned that sound moral values are practiced in aHareas of university life. Honesty in academic work is essen tial for personal growth and an ethical life pleasing to God. Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense, and will be handled by individual facu lty in various ways includ­ ing lowered grades or possible loss of course credit. The fac­ ulty member will work with the Dean for Student Affairs to consider further disciplinary ac tion, including dismissal. A full statemen t concerning academic dishonesty can be found in the Undergraduate Student Handbook.

Full-Time Undergraduate Students Satisfactory academic progress toward a baccalaureate degree as a full-time undergraduate student is obtained by completing 12 or more units per semester or 24 or more units per academic year while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.0. Repeated courses previously passed cannot be counted toward minimum satisfac tory academic progress requirements. The student must complete the degree requirements with in the period of time required when pro­ gressing at the minimum full-time rate . For example, in a program requiring 130 units progressing at 12 units, a stu­ dent would have l l semesters to complete the program. Full-Time Graduate Students Satisfactory academic progress toward a graduate degree as a full-time graduate student is obtained by completing eight or more units per semester or 16 or more units per aca­ demic year whi le maintaining the minimum cumulative GPA specified by the program requirements in which the student is enrolled. Repeated courses previously passed cannot be counted toward minimum satisfactory academic progress requirements. The student must complete the degree requirements within the period of time required when pro­ gressing at the minimum full-time rate. For example, in a program requiring 96 units progressing at nine units, a stu­ dent would have 12 semesters to complete the program. Doctoral students are considered fu ll time for a maximum of two years in the dissertation phase of their program. Part-Time Students Satisfactory academic progress toward a degree for a part-time student is obtained by completing six or more units per semester and maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for the undergraduate, and four or more units per semes­ ter and maintain the minimum program requirement for the graduate student. Repeated courses previously passed can­ not be counted toward minimum satisfactory academic progress requirements. The student must complete the degree requirements within a maximum of three years beyond that required for a full-time student. Exceptions Exceptions to these standards are discussed under any

applicable degree program. ACADEMIC PROBATION

Any student faili ng to maintain the minimum grade point average as outlined in the Statement of Satisfactory Academic Progress will be placed on academic probation. Should the student not meet the minimum cumulative GPA at the end of two consecutive semesters of academic proba­ tion, the appropriate facultycommittee will consider the stu­ dent for academic disquali fi cation.
