U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook • Hazardous Drug Management Certificate: Released in the summer of 2020, this program provides PTCB CPhTs the ability to display their knowledge in managing hazardous drugs, following federal regulations in the disposal of drugs, and playing a vital role in ensuring the safety of the facility. • Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention (CSPD) Certificate: Released in September 2020, this certificate allows PTCB CPhTs to show their commitment to patients, pharmacies, and communities by assisting in minimizing the impact of the ongoing opioid crisis. • Immunization Administration Certificate: Projected to be released in early 2021, this certificate allows PTCB CPhTs to demonstrate their readiness to administer vaccines where allowed and showcase their knowledge and ability to safely administer vaccines. In the near future, PTCB is committed to providing additional certificate programs for qualified PTCB CPhTs to continue to advance their knowledge. Anticipated future assessment-based certificates include point-of-care testing, medication manage- ment, regulatory compliance, supply chain management, and community health worker. With these diverse certificates cover- ing various specialized pharmacy technician roles, CPhTs can continue to showcase their skills within their pharmacy teams. The following certificates cover a wide range of positions ful- filled by pharmacy technicians: • Medication History Certificate: Released in the fall of 2019, this program is offered to PTCB CPhTs who desire to show - case their advanced knowledge in collecting thorough and accurate medication histories. • Technician Product Verification (TPV) Certificate: Released in the fall of 2019, this program is offered to PTCB CPhTs to demonstrate their skills in safeguarding patients from dis- pensing errors, including completing final verification duties and checking other pharmacy technicians or automated sys- tems for accuracy in dispensing medications. • Billing and Reimbursement Certificate: Released in the summer of 2020, this certificate allows PTCB CPhTs to take on more roles in assisting patients to have access to their medications by showcasing their experience in managing claims, determining eligibility requirements, and many more administrative functions in the pharmacy.

PTCB offers advanced certifications to support the advanced roles of technicians. Certifications differ from assess- ment-based certificates as they require credential holders to complete CE and regularly renew to maintain active status. • Certified Compounded Sterile: Released in 2017, this advanced credential allows PTCB CPhTs to demonstrate their knowledge and skills as a specialized pharmacy technician in the preparation of medications in a sterile environment to prevent contamination. With a CSPT certifi- cation, PTCB CPhTs have the opportunity to be recognized by employers and colleagues for their dedication within their pharmacy team. Annual recertification is required. • Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician Credential (CPhT-Adv): Released in 2020, this credential can be obtained by a PTCB CPhT by earning at least four PTCB certificates, including TPV and/or medica- tion history, or three certificates, including TPV and/ or medication history, and PTCB’s Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) Certification. CPhTs who earn this credential are recognized for their knowledge, experience, and dedication to advancing medi- cation and patient safety. Conclusion

Pharmacy technicians have always been an important part of the pharmacy team. As opportunities for pharmacy techni- cians continue to evolve to more advanced responsibilities, pharmacists can dedicate additional time to direct patient care services. Pharmacists and employers who supervise and hire pharmacy technicians are encouraged to determine how these advanced pharmacy technician roles can fit into career ladders. They are also encouraged to enable their phar- macy technicians to take on new roles within the pharmacy team, as allowed. With the help of the pharmacy profession and with the credentials created by PTCB, technicians are able to earn deserved recognition for their knowledge and skills. At the same time, pharmacists can be recognized for their clinical expertise. Together, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can continue to provide the utmost patient care with their knowledge, skills, and evolving responsibilities.
