/STE 695 Research Seminar ( 1) Guidance in the development of a thesis or research paper. Students produce a pre­ liminary thesis statement, proposal, outline, and working bibliography. Prerequisites: (a) minimum grade of 'B' in ISTE 500 (b) no more than 6 units of coursework remaining. /STE 696 Research Paper (1) A paper based on classroom research, literature review, or the design of a syllabus or appropriate teaching materials. Required of all students choosing the comprehensive examination track.

Examination of the various factors which enter into the process of acquiring a second language and culture. Several modern lan­ guage teaching methods are examined from the point of view of a learner. Prerequisite: ISAL 507. /SAL 646 Sociolinguistics (3) Overview of the relationship between language and society. Topics covered in­ clude language and culture, language and social change, ethnicity, language contact, language policy, ethnography of communi­ cation, and social aspects of conversation. Prerequisite: ISAL 507. /SAL 648 Discourse Analysis (3) Examination of language in its commu­ nicative contexts. Covers three main areas: text analysis, discourse analysis proper (oral and written), and pedagogical applications. /SAL 668 Seminar in Applied Linguistics (2) In-depth examination of some main areas of applied linguistics. Topics vary, de­ pending on class interests.

Students choosing the comprehensive examination as their summative project must also do ISTE 696 and a two-unit elec­ tive in ISTE or ISAL. /STE 699 M.A. Thesis (3) Research for and writing of an MA Thesis. Prerequisite: Consent of MA committee.

/SAL 697 Comprehensive Examination (0)

Students choosing the comprehensive examination as their summative project must also do ISAL 696 and a two-unit elec­ tive in ISTE or ISAL. /SAL 699 M.A. Thesis (3) Research for and writing of an MA Thesis. Prerequisite: Consent of MA committee.

/SAL 507 Introduction to Lo,nguage and Linguistics (3) Introduction to basic concepts in the sci­ entific study of language, major areas of lin­ guistic analysis, and several subfields of lin­ guistics important for ESOL teachers. Prerequisite for graduate programs in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. /SAL 511 Applied Linguistics (3) Introduction to theoretical and practical issues in applied linguistics, focusing on several important areas; e.g., bilingual edu­ cation, lexicography, literacy, orthography design, social dialects and education, trans­ lation. Prerequisite: ISAL 507. /SAL 574 Practicum in Second Lo,nguage and Culture Learning (3) Field experience in independent lan­ guage learning and cultural investigation, using student-developed language texts and ethnographic interviewing. !SAL 584 Articulatory Phonetics (2) Discrimination, transcription, and pro­ duction of speech sounds. Prerequisite: ISAL 507 or equivalent.
