A faculty advisor will guide each student in planning a program of courses to serve his or her ministry needs. Admission into the graduate program of the School of Intercultural Studies does not guarantee completion of the doctoral degree. Students who enter the D.Miss. program after completion of a master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution must complete a minimum of 45 units at Biola University. Each student's program will be determined in consultation with the faculty advisor. Missiology: D.Miss. students will com plete a minimum of 48 semester hours in in tercultural studies and missiology. This core consists of: 22 units: SCL 500, 501, 502, SHM 550, 742;
Doctor ofEducation (1) REsIDENCE AND COURSE WORK The university program requires a total of 90 semester units for the Ed.D degree. A minimum of 48 semester hours of residence beyond the masters degree is required. In addition, the student must complete 12 semester units of dissertation research . A faculty advisor will guide each student in planning a program of courses to serve his or her ministry needs. Each student will se lect a mentor from the graduate faculty to guide his or her dissertation research. (3) COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS All students must pass comprehensive exams covering the following areas: 1) Intercultural Studies; 2) History and Theology of Mission; 3) Society, Technology and Missions; and 4) the student's special ization. These exams are given once a year in April and serve as a major means of evalu ating a student's suitability to continue stud ies toward the doctorate. (4) FIELD MINISTRY AND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT All students must complete a minimum of three continuous years of practical mis sionary experience in a crosscultural (or cross-subcultural) setting. It is assumed that the student will acquire fluency in a second language learned during this mis sionary service and that this language will be the language of field research. (5) ADMISSION TO CANDIDACY Official candidacy for the doctorate signi fies an advanced stage in the student's progress and is characterized by self-directed research and preparation of a dissertation under the direction of a faculty advisor. In order to be admitted to candidacy the student must have: 1) successfully completed the Preliminary Oral Interview; 2) passed the comprehensive examination;, 3) completed the field ministry requirement; and 4) re ceived approval of the dissertation proposal by the Doctoral Committee. Upon reaching candidacy a student must register once a year for three units dissertation until graduation. (6) DISSERTATION The doctoral dissertation will be based upon research conducted in the field of min istry, usually over a period of 6 months to 1 year. The dissertation must demonstrate high attainment in scholarship related to professional missiology. The dissertation topic and proposal must be approved by the candidate's advisory committee prior to be ginning of the student's field research. Three weeks prior to expected graduation the candidate must submit to the School of Intercultural Studies dean the original and four copies of his dissertation signed by the dissertation committee. (7) FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION The final examination is an oral defense of the dissertation before the doctoral com mittee and other invited professionals.

Once dissertation units are completed, students must register for one unit each semester SEM 897 or 898) until graduation. (2) ORAL I NTERVIEW AND ADMISSION TO DOCTORAL STUDY All students will have an oral interview with a faculty committee to evaluate their progress and potential for successful com pletion of the doctoral program. The inter view is scheduled after one semester in resi dence and the completion of at least one significant piece of written work demon strating the student's skill in research writ ing. The results of this interview are re ported to the faculty which votes either to admit, admit with conditions, or not to admit the student to doctoral study.
