DISSERTATION STANDING Doctor of Education cand idates must register for at least 3 and no more than 6 units of DE 891 (Dissertation) every fall and spring semester until 12 units have been completed . If add iti onal time is required, dissertation students must regis te r for DE 892 (Continuous Enrollment) every fal l and spring semester until the dis sertation has been successfull y defended. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS PROGRAM SEQUENCE The Doctor of Education program requires completion o f a minimum of 48 semester units of course work and 12 units of dissertation beyond the master's degree. A maximum of 9 semes te r hours of doctoral level courses may be trans ferred into the program from accredited institutions. Unless a modified program sequence (such as a "summer attendance" program) has been approved by the Ed.D. Committee, at least 24 units of a student's program must be completed within any consecutive 24 months. The Doctor of Education program is composed of a 15 unit core of five courses (DE 801, 803, 804, 808, and 888), a 30 unit specialization (see description under "Curriculum"), and a 15 unit research com ponent (DE 890 and a 12 unit dissertation). Every student must maintain a 3.0 grade po int average to continue in the pro gram. Students are placed on academic probation if their grade point average falls below 3.0. If, after one semester on pro bation, the grade po int average is not brought up to the required level, the student may be requested to withdraw from the Ed .D. program. A student can not graduate wh il e on probation. No grade less than C (2.0) wi ll be cred ited toward the Ed.D. degree. Students who rece ive more than two grades of C or lower wi ll be reviewed by the Ed.D. com mittee, and are sub ject to probation or dis missal from the program.
Un less an extension has been granted by the Ed.D. Committee, all Ed.D. requirements must be completed within five years of initial enrollment. PROGRAM AGENDA Before completing 12 units of cred it, a written individual program agenda must be approved by the program director. T hi s agenda will contain a proposed course sequence as well as a statement of intended speciali zation. Research compe tency goals will also be identified during this process. VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE Due to the appli ed nature of the pro gram, students are required to have com pleted four years of approved mini stry experience before the Doctor of Educa tion degree will be granted by Biola University. Prior ministry experience app li es to this requirement. Guid elines for the evaluation of this experience are provided in the Ed.D. Handbook. RESEARCH COMPETENCE Specific research tools or skills suitable for dissertation study are to be demon strated. The Ed.D. program director wi ll validate competence through review of examin ations, completed research, or course work. Appropriate research tools and methods include Biblical Hebrew, Koine Greek, a relevant modern language, statistical analys is, computer program ming, or one of many research method o logies app li cable to educational prob lems and issues. Defi ciencies in research competence may result in additional pro gram prerequisites and/ or required com ponents o f an Ed.D. speciali zation. QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS Doctoral students are required to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the field of study by examination. The content of the comprehensive written exams is drawn primarily from faculty cours es, seminar presentations, and individual student research . The exan1s represent me five core areas of the Ed.D. curriculum. It is recommended mat mese examina tions be taken in the last semester of resi dence after 36 to 48 units have been complet ed . The examinations are admini stered during me mird and fourm weeks of me fall and spring semesters, and may be arranged for summer terms.
CLASSIFICATION OF
ADMITTED STUDENTS Each admitted student is classified in one of the following categories: FULL GRADUATE STANDING Applicants who intend to obtain a degree and who are admitted without reservation are awarded full grad uate standing. On ly students with full graduate standing may become degree candidates. CONDITIONAL STANDING Conditional admiss ion may be granted to a student whose academic record con tains deficiencies. The student must demonstrate ability to do graduate work at a high level of achievement. After complet ing either two courses or a semester of work, the record of a cond itional standing student is reviewed by the Ed .D. commit tee. T he committee may then award full graduate standing, require that the student continue with condi tional standing until specified requirements have been met, or request withdrawal from the program. Conditional admission may also be grant ed to students with deficiencies in educa tional, theological, and vocational admis sion requirements . Amaximum of 18 units can be taken with conditional standi ng. INACTIVE STANDING Inactive students are those who have been granted a leave of absence from the program. A leave of absence is received through petiti on for change of sta tus on ly if there is sufficient reason for interrupting the program and intention to return to active enrollment. A leave of absence must be renewed each semester and may not exceed two consecuti ve semesters. Each leave must be approved by the student's advisor and the director of the Ed.D. program. Students on leave are required to register for DE 892, Continuous Enrollment. If a stud ent fa il s to enroll during a fall or spring semester without being granted a leave of absence, automatic continuous enrollment is initiated and a continuation fee is charged. Subsequently, if a student does not complete registration, or if a peti tion for leave is not received by the end of the twelfth week of classes, the student is withdrawn from the program. Students who withdraw from the pro gram must: 1) apply fo r re-admission to Bio la Uni vers ity, and 2) petiti on the Ed.D.
